This study extracted and analyzed the contents of 42 papers related to school architecture applying 'user participatory design' published in academic journals from 2017 to 2022. The papers were categorized into 'related projects,' 'research methods', 'research subjects', 'research contents', 'research purpose,' and 'keywords and problems,' which were analyzed separately, to review improvement plans and directions for successfully carrying out participatory design in school architecture. The results are as follows. First, for 'related projects,' studies related to 'Color My School Beautiful Project' and 'School Space Innovation Projects' were investigated the most. Second, 'research methods' were more 'empirical methods.' Third, 'research target' was most often evaluated in 'elementary schools.' Fourth, for 'research content,' the content related to 'design proposal' was surveyed at the highest rate, and for 'research purpose,' the purpose of 'data provision' was surveyed at the highest rate. Fifth, an analysis through 'keywords and limitations' confirmed that research related to environmental improvement was mainly conducted, and limitations, such as 'projects,' 'policies,' 'ordering organization,' and 'processes,' were identified. These results highlighted the matters to be carried out to improve user participation design in school architecture.
