The aim of this study is to investigate how August Strindberg's play Miss Julie reflects the image of women and the struggle for the power. Miss Julie is a clear example of Strindberg's vision of the world. Miss Julie is viewed as one of the most important plays emerging from the literary movement known of Naturalism. By the early twentieth century the play was considered an important facet of modern drama and Strindberg would still have earned an important place in world drama even today. Strindberg, inspired by Victoreia Benedictsson's suicide, makes Julie representative of emancipation. I understand Miss Julie as Strindberg's contribution to the discussion of equality. There had been a strong tendency to define women as biologically weak when this play was written in 1888. This trend grew stronger with the demand of equality between the sexes. Julie rebels
against the restrictions placed on her as a woman and as a member of the upper class. She displays a blatant disregard for the class and gender conventions. In his preface to Miss Julie, Strindberg refers to Julie as a 〝man-hating half woman". Psychologically — considered within the context of her time—Julie is neither wholly male nor wholly female, and she cannot find a place for herself within the social confines of either gender role. This essay shows how it could be reconfigured to replace dichotomous polarities of gender with a Jessica Benjamin's theory. Benjamin begins with the roots of psychoanalysis in Freud's theory of sexuality and identifies herself with the two-person model of intersubjectivity. Benjamin refers both to a capacity and
to a theoretical standpoint with regards to intersubjectivity. always includes this paradoxical mixture of otherness and togetherness. The idea of intersubjectivity refuses to see other as an object, instead, it regards other as another subject. Benjamin's complementarity is another core term in the discourse on
intesubjectivity and gender. Complementarities are dialectic relationships between opposites such as male/female, passive/active, observer/participant. Miss julie is full of dichotomy;, a high/low, filth/purity,
female/male, upper class/lower class. Julie not only rebels against her class, she also rebels against the rules of her gender. She tries to convince Jean to treat her as an equal. But Jean's main desire is to use her as a stepping stone to a more powerful position. From this point through the essay, intersubjective
subjects of both genders we must be able to tolerate contain different voices, asymmetries, and contradictions, love and hate, masculinity and femininity. In other words, it is ambivalence.
