This article attemps to check the literary possibility of “the fantastic” novels which has produced various kinds of literary discourse since the 1990's. As a new kind ofthe fantastic novel, this article suggests the lately procuced Meta-fiction. (김영하's ꡔ아랑은 왜ꡕ is chosen as the representative) Tzvetan Todorov, who had established the theory of “the fantastic” novels, defined the “the fantastic” as hesitation of the hero between “the real” and “the imaginary”. In fact, this hesitation means uncertainty of the cognition. Todorov's theory of “the fantastic” was the product of 19th century(During that period, people can be sure of “the real”).
But so called Modernist writers think that “the real” itself go beyond the language.(Let's call it “the Real”) So they think the novel-which is made of language- can't represent “the Real”. Lately produced Meta- fictions suggest the new view of the realationship between “the Real” and “the fiction”. They think they can “compose” the “Real” by col- liding two literary heterogeneitic styles. As the Result of that practice, “the Real” is not one, but plural. So readers can experience the new kind of hesitation, the “fantastic” between the many realities
