The 20th century nationalistic and Argentina representive composer Alberto Ginastera(1916-1983) composed many works by combination of many techniques of Argentin’s folk music and modern music.
His work can be divided into three periods, each, objective nationalism, subjective nationalism, and Neo-expressionism.
In objective nationalism period, Argentina folk elements directly showed and Incas 5 scale, Malambo rhythms was used characteristically. In subjective nationalism period that he had been in the United States, folk element was expressed indirectly and transitional figure to Expressionism shows and open code, 5 scale system was used, which was supposed to come from Africa.
In Neo- Expressionism period, which modern elements was used in most portion of his works rather than the folk element by using of 12-tone technique, transposition, backward and so on. His works were more closer to modernism. Also in this period, he completed Opera in addition to the piano works, and he tried to new tones in combination of traditional and modern style. This sonata No.1 is appeared a proper musical harmony between folk music elements and modern music expression on the basis of classical sonata form. Twelve tone was used for th first time in this work.
The work is composed with the use of the elements of folk music, such as hemiola, Malambo rhythm and the elements of modern music were used twelve tone technique and atonality.
In this paper, we would like to help the performers effectively play by searching how can each techniques and elements like folk music technique of Argentina and modern music technique of 20th century, be appeared in Ginastera’s Piano Sonata No. 1 .
