Thirty-five Spraque-Dawley rats, weighting 180-250gm, were divided into control and irradiation groups. The irradiation groups were divided into three group and 6 MeV electron was irradiated at the jejunum of small intestine. This three irradiation groups were sacrificed at 10 houres. 4 weeks and 8 weeks after following 8 Gray, 16 Gray different single does irradiation with 4 ×4 cm field of view.
Authors attempted to study for acute and chronic radiation effect of small intestine with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
The histomorphological changes were as follows:
Acute radiation effects were as follows: In gross observation, a few of rats developed a diarrhea in irradiation groups. The histomorphological changes were cells of apoptosis and necrosis, villi shortening. The mucosal surface was focally fragmented and submucosa revealed mild edema. Vessels were mild dilated and congested.
Chronic radiation effects were as follows: The villi of small intestine were severely shortened, widened and microvilli was almost disappeared. Vessel walls were thickened, severly ectasia, focal rupture and hemorrhaged. Mucosal surface fragmentation, erosion, saccular and submucosal fibrosis were more severe than acute radiation effects. These acute and chronic radiation injury effect was more serious when radiation does increased.
Conclusion: According to the above on light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy findings, authors suggest that we must tries to be effective radiation therapy and to be careful protector in acute and chronic radiation injuries of small intestinal mucosa.
