왕양명 지행합일설을 어떻게 이해할 것인가? - 지행합일의 정당화 논리를 중심으로 - = How to Understand the Concept of Wang Yangming's Unity of Knowledge and Action?

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 왕양명의 지행합일설을 정통하게 이해하고자 하는 독자들에게 일목요연한 안내를 제공하는 것을 1차적인 목적으로 삼아 두 가지 주제를 다루었다. 먼저 2장에서는 지행합일설을 제출하는 과정을 추적했다. 왕양명이 37세에 용장에서 심즉리를 깨달은 후에 다음 해 38세에 여전히 적소에 있으면서 지행합일을 제창했다고 『연보』는 밝히고 있다. 그런데 『연보』를 읽어보면, 왕양명이 지행합일을 제창한 어떤 연유에 대한 전후 설명이 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 『연보』의 기록을 세밀하게 살펴보면 단서를 발견할 수 있다. 곧 심즉리설을 지행합일을 가지고 풀어냈다는 해석이 가능해진다. 이어서 3장에서는 지행합일의 정당화 논리를 살펴보았다. 지와 행이 합일되어야 한다는 주장은 충분히 수긍이 가지만 지와 행 본체(本體: 본래 모습)가 합일되어 있다는 왕양명의 주장은 쉽게 이해가 가지 않는다. 따라서 지행합일을 비판하는 전형적인 입장을 ‘알아도 안 한다’와 ‘알아야 한다’는 두 명제로 정리하고, 왕양명이 어떻게 자신의 지행합일을 정당화 하는지 살펴보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper addresses two main topics as a primary objective to provide clear guidance to readers who wish to thoroughly understand Wang Yangming's unity of knowledge and action concept. First, in Chapter 2, the process of presenting the unity of knowledge and action is traced. It is revealed in the historical records that Wang Yangming expounded the unity of knowledge and action while still in Longchang at the age of 38, the year after he awakened to Xin-Ji-Li(sincerity in his heart) at the age of 37. However, although the historical records do not provide any explicit explanation for the reason Wang Yangming presented the unity of knowledge and action, careful examination of the historical records reveals clues. Consequently, it becomes possible to interpret that Wang Yangming expounded the unity of knowledge and action based on his theory of Xin-Ji-Li. In Chapter 3, we examined the justification logic of the unity of knowledge and action. While the suggestion for the unity of knowledge and action seems reasonable, it is not easy to understand the claim that knowledge and action are originally united, as argued by Wang Yang-ming. Therefore, we summarized the typical stance critiquing the unity of knowledge and action as two propositions: 'even if you know it, it is not necessary for you to do it’ and after knowing it, and then you can do it,’ and looked into how Wang Yang-ming justifies his unity of knowledge and action.
