본 논문은 리처드 파워스(Richard Powers)의 소설 『당혹』(Bewilderment, 2021)을 티머시 모턴(Timothy Morton)의 하이퍼오브젝트(hyperobject) 및 어두운 생태학(dark ecology) 개념, 그리고 도나 해러웨이(Donna Haraway)의 공생(symbiosis)과 공산(sympoiesis) 개념을 통해 분석함으로써, 기후 위기 시대 인간과 비인간 존재의 얽힘과 생태적 정동(affect)의 문제를 고찰한다. 소설의 중심인물인 외계생물학자 테오 번(Theo Byrne)과 그의 아들 로빈(Robin)은 각각 행성적상상력과 생태적 정동을 매개하는 존재로 기능한다. 로빈의 정서적 불안과 폭력적반응은 단순한 병리적 증상이 아니라, 기후 위기라는 하이퍼오브젝트에 대한 신체적, 정동적 반응이다. 모턴에 따르면 하이퍼오브젝트란 시공간적으로 광범위하게퍼져 있으면서도 인간의 삶에 지대한 영향을 미치는 객체로서, 끈적함(viscosity), 비국지성(nonlocality), 상호객체성(interobjectivity) 등의 속성을 지닌다. 로빈은이 하이퍼오브젝트를 누구보다 예민하게 감지하는 존재로, 생태 재난을 온몸으로느끼며 저항에 나선다. 소설 속 세계는 환경 위기와 정치적 권위주의가 맞물린총체적 붕괴의 양상을 보여준다. 이러한 맥락에서 테오는 인공지능 기반의 디코디드 뉴런피드백 치료(Decoded Neurofeedback Therapy)를 통해 로빈의 정서적문제를 해결하고자 한다. 이 치료에서 사용되는 인공지능 기계는 죽은 어머니알리샤의 신경 패턴을 로빈에게 전달하는 정동 기계(affect machine)로 작동한다.

This essay examines Richard Powers's Bewilderment (2021) as a climate-change novel that weaves together planetary crisis, affective vulnerability, technological mediation, and ecological mourning. Central to the analysis is Robin, a neurodivergent child whose intense emotional responses to ecological destruction resist reduction to individual pathology. Drawing on Timothy Morton's concepts of hyperobjects and dark ecology, the essay argues that Robin's anxiety and grief constitute a profound affective response to the hyperobject of climate catastrophe which is one characterized by viscosity, nonlocality, and interobjectivity. His suffering is not aberrant but symptomatic of a world structured by extinction, denial, and political violence. The essay further analyzes the novel's treatment of decoded neurofeedback and artificial intelligence. Though neurotechnology initially enables Robin to internalize the affective patterns of his deceased mother, Alyssa, thereby mediating memory and intersubjective connection across the boundary of death, the novel ultimately frames technology as deeply ambivalent. It can facilitate empathy and sympoietic relationality, but it cannot resolve the structural violence of ecological collapse, authoritarian politics, and capitalist instrumentalization. The forced termination of Robin's treatment by right-wing political forces — and his subsequent death — enacts precisely the dark ecological logic Morton describes. Drawing on Donna Haraway's concepts of symbiosis, sympoiesis, and kin-making, the essay also reads the novel as an exploration of multispecies relationality. Robin's sense of kinship with endangered animals, rivers, trees, and even the dead challenges anthropocentric ethics and gestures toward a more expansive ecological community. Yet Bewilderment refuses redemptive environmentalism. Instead, it enacts a form of dark ecological mourning — one that does not promise salvation from planetary catastrophe, but asks how human and nonhuman beings might continue to coexist, grieve, and care within a damaged planetary mesh where life, matter, memory, and death remain inseparably entangled.
