The Paintings of the Ten Kings at Bongeunsa Temple (1777) is a Buddhist painting consisting of four panels, each of which depicts one of the Great Kings (i.e. 1 and 3; 2 and 4; 5, 7, and 9; and 6, 8, and 10). The purpose of this study is to discuss the historical background and stylistic characteristics of The Paintings of the Ten Kings at Bongeunsa Temple, with a focus on the paintings of the Great Kings, particularly nos. 5, 7 and 9, and nos. 6, 8 and 10. The discussion starts with an examination of the records of various Buddhist events that were held at Bongeunsa Temple in the eighteenth century, as well as the history of the temple. The results show that these events were conducted by the successive groups of organizers and monk-artists who participated in them, suggesting that the people who organized them, as well as the systems used to organize and hold them, were subject to strict management.
The subsequent comparative analysis of the paintings with two others that were created in the same period, show that the artists who created the Bongeunsa paintings selectively adopted the images and style of Buddhist art in the areas of Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do while adhering to the traditional style of paintings of the Ten Kings produced in the eighteenth century. That being the case, it is reasonable to suppose that the characteristic images and style of the Bongeunsa paintings were influenced by the greater mobility allowed to Buddhist monks following the changes that occurred in the corvée system imposed upon Buddhist warrior-monks, and also by their participation in various state work projects, which must have contributed to the exchange of artistic styles.
In conclusion, The Paintings of the Ten Kings at Bongeunsa Temple constitute one of the earliest works of its kind created in the vicinity of Joseon’s capital, and it is significant in the history of Korean Buddhist paintings in that it contains important clues about the early phase of this genre of painting, whose creators explored their own style while selectively adopting styles from other regions of Joseon.
