This study seeks to excavate the colonialist unconscious concealed beneath the narrative of post-war Japanese society’s glorious resurgence within the social periphery of subculture, thereby elucidating the surrounding cultural political dynamics. Otoko Michi (Original story by Ikki Kajiwara, Illustrated by Takao Yaguchi), a Gekiga serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 1970, othered Zainichi Koreans as ‘unruly foreigners’ and summoned them as objects of purification.
Focusing on the seven-month controversy between Shogakukan and the ‘Nihon Chosen Kenkyusho’ (Japan Research Institute of Korean Affairs), a group of Japanese intellectuals, this paper analyzes how the pursuit of “realism” championed by the publishing power and the Gekiga genre functioned as a deceptive shield for ignoring the suffering of minorities. Ikki Kajiwara’s Gekiga followed the discourse of “unsettling Zainichi Koreans in black markets” intentionally produced by post-war Japan and “deformed” them at an epistemological level. This study identifies that the reflection of such “selective” reality was not a representation of fact but a figurative reconstruction of colonial ideology. In particular, while analyzing the protagonist’s struggle in the black market as a narrative metaphor for the reconstruction of “Japan” as a unitary ethnic community, this study examines how such epistemological deformation inscribed a sensory tension — a “texture of disquiet” — that precedes logic into the readers.
The archive of negative affect attached to the images of Zainichi Koreans, formed through such mangaesque distortion, transcends time and space to resonate strongly with contemporary hate speech and the visual grammar of the “net-right” (Netto-uyoku). In conclusion, this research empirically demonstrates how the iconography of the 1970s became a sensory origin of modern hatred, thereby attempting a critical intervention to dismantle the old senses of hatred attached to our bodies and to invent a new frequency of coexistence.
