조선업과 무역수지 간 동태적 영향 분석 = A Dynamic Analysis of the Shipbuilding Industry and Trade Balance

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 조선업과 무역수지 간의 동태적 영향 관계를 파악하기 위해 LDA 토픽 모델링과 벡터오차수정모형(VECM)을 결합하여 분석하였다. 먼저 뉴스 기사 텍스트 분석을 통해 신조선 계약, 조선업 수출액, 조선업 수출 비중, PPI, 금리, 환율, 무역수지 7개 주요 변수를 선정하였으며, 이후 VECM 결과 전월 조선업 수출액이 1% 증가할 경우 무역수지가 0.2999% 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 전월 조선업 수출 비중이 1% 상승하면 컨테이너선 발주량이 0.2639% 줄어들어, 발주·건조 간 시차와 선석 제약 등 산업 특수성이 작용함을 확인하였다. 아울러 환율은 조선업 수출액과 수출 비중 모두에 음(-)의 영향을 미쳤으며, 이는 조선업의 Heavy Tail 결제 구조와 환율 헤지 전략이 복합적으로 작용한 결과로 해석된다.

This study combines LDA topic modeling with a VECM to examine the dynamic relationship between the shipbuilding industry and the trade balance. Through text analysis of news articles, seven key variables were identified: new ship orders, shipbuilding exports, the share of shipbuilding exports, PPI, interest rate, the won-dollar exchange rate, and the trade balance. The VECM results indicate that a 1% increase in shipbuilding exports in the previous month leads to a 0.2999% decrease in the trade balance, and that a 1% rise in the previous month's share of shipbuilding exports reduces containership orders by 0.2639%. These findings highlight the industry's unique characteristics, such as time lags between ordering and construction and limited shipyard capacity. In addition, the won-dollar exchange rate was found to have a negative impact on both shipbuilding exports and the share of shipbuilding exports, which can be explained by the Heavy Tail payment structure and foreign exchange hedging strategies prevalent in the shipbuilding industry.
