디안젤로(D'angelo)의 작곡, 편곡 연구를 통해 본 네오 소울(Neo Soul) 위상에 대한 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 디안젤로(D’angelo)라는 흑인음악 아티스트의 음악세계 및 작곡, 편곡 연구이기에 데뷔곡 및 수상경력이 있는 앨범 수록 곡들에 대한 분석을 통해 네오 소울이 지니는 위상과 특징을 알아보기 위한 작업이다.
흑인 음악 또는 블랙 뮤직(Black Music)은 미국의 흑인 발상 음악의 총칭이다. 강한 비트 감, 그루브 감을 특징으로 한다. 블루스, 가스펠, 소울, 알앤비, 힙합, 재즈 등 현재 세계적으로 다양한 형태로 전개되고 있는 장르를 낳고, 또한 팝과 록, 전자 음악 등에도 영향을 미치고 20세기에 태어난 거의 모든 대중음악의 원천이 되었다.
본 연구는 소울의 하위 장르인 네오 소울의 아티스트인 디안젤로라는 음악인의 음악활동과 작품을 분석함으로서, 현재에도 대중적, 음악적으로 영향을 알아보려고 한다.
디안젤로를 시작으로 네오 소울이라는 단어가 만들어지고 1990년대 후기부터 현대에 이르기까지 많은 후발주자들이 네오 소울을 대표하고 대중음악을 이끌며 영향을 주고 있으며, 디안젤로가 보여주는 음악의 작곡, 편곡 법은 현대에도 사용되고 발전되고 있다. 또한 단순한 리듬과 작곡법을 나아가 음악이 주는 메시지는 연인과의 사랑이야기에 국한되지 않고 사상적인 메시지와 새로운 발상의 메시지가 담겨 있어 음악이라는 매개체로 지속적으로 문화와 사상에 영향을 주고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The objective of this study is to examine the music insights, and composition and arrangement of D’angelo as a Black artist. This study looks at the status and characteristics of neo soul music by analyzing the pieces in his first album and albums that was awarded.
The Black music is a term that refers to all Black originated music genres. It is characterized by strong beats and groves. It inspired many music genres around the world including blues, gospel, soul, R&B, hip-hop and jazz. It also influenced pop, rock and electronic music which became the roots for almost all music genres of the 20th century.
This study analyzes the music careers and artworks of D’angelo who is an artist of neo soul which is the sub group of soul to study influence of his music in popular culture and music field. The name neo soul has began from D’angelo. Many followed his path from the end of 1990s to present representing neo soul and leading the pop music. The composition and arrangements of D’angelo is still used and developed now. Moreover, simple rhythms and messages from the music is not only limited to love but conveys ideological messages and innovation. The messages of D’angelo has continuously influenced culture and ideas of today in the form of music.
