The 1950s in Japan were greatly concerned with the question of how to express Japan's tradition in the domain of the avant-garde. This paper takes the term Controversies on Tradition (Dentou Ronsou.), more conventionally used with regard to the architectural history of the period, and amplifies it to focus on the prevailing climate of the times, with a view to putting forward a new framework of the history of postwar art.
Although the onset of the Controversies on Tradition can be seen as a reaction to the culture of the American occupation, a considerable part was also played by Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American sculptor, who came to Japan in 1950, By this time, Noguchi had already won a considerable name for himself in the United States, Accordingly, artists in Japan, where he was the center of a great deal of attention, looked to him to impart American modernism, What he was after was quite the opposite: he wanted artists in Japan to rediscover the Japanese tradition as modernism, During his stay in Japan, he was also active in creating his own work inspired by his unique view of Japanese art.Among other creations, his works from this time include sculpture in terracotta, public art, and lanterns known as "Akari". It is a view that covertly denies Buddhist images, attempting to incorporate into the work itself a place or a setting, as is the case with the Japanese garden and garden rocks. In one sense, Noguchi can also be described as a forerunner of postmodernism, in that he went beyond the bounds of modem Western sculpture, showing a willingness to run against modernism and attempt to recreate an ancient or medieval artistic perspective.
Both Noguchi's works and statements provoked an enormous reaction in Japan. While his initiatives to reinterpret Japanese tradition along new lines gained a sympathetic reaction from many Japanese artists and designers in as much as they saw it as pointing to new directions in Japanese art, there was nonetheless widespread skepticism. This arose from the fact that some felt uncomfortable with his westernized understanding of Japan. Criticism also arose from the difference in the orientation of the expression when portraying "things Japanese" in the form of modernism. When viewed as a whole, such reactions can simply be described as amounting to Controversies on Tradition. It is also possible to view the Controversies on Tradition in architectural history as having developed out of the same debate in the world of art. Some of the artists that came into contact with Noguchi during those days went on to rethink Japanese tradition, They included such artists whose activities spanned multiple genres as architect Kenzo Tange, painters Taro Okamoto and Saburo Hasegawa, ikebana artist Sofu Teshigawara, potter Kazuo Yagi, and industrial designer Isamu Kenmochi.
And as a result of rethinking Japanese tradition, they also created it afresh, which led to their activities of the international scene.
Possible elements forming the backdrop to the age in which this tradition debate arose include the gap revealed by international art exhibitions in the way Japanese artists were viewed at home and abroad, the destruction by fire of the main hall of the Horyuji Temple and the popularization of culture brought about by the passing of the Cultural Properties Protection Act. Another possible factor was that avant-garde artists were looking for something new to place their faith in after their disappointment with communism and its demands for socialist realism. And the political stability and economic growth that followed in the latter half of the 1950s saw a lull in the intensity with which avant-garde artists agonized about the tradition of Japan. Nonetheless, the Controversies on Tradition can perhaps also be seen as having opened up the way for the Mono-ha movement that got underway at the end of the 1960s, as well as of the Bikyoto movement of the 1970s. Ultimately, the significance o
