The printing of the Tripitaka Koreana in 1968 is distinctive in that 13 copies were printed and distributed at home and abroad as the last print of the Tripitaka Koreana. The purpose of the printing project in 1968 was developed as a national project to promote Korean Buddhism and national culture to the world along with the missionary Activities and research of Buddhism.
On February 16, 1963, the Chief Priest of Haeinsa applied for permission to the Ministry of Education with the basic plan to print 6 sets of the Tripitaka Koreana for 5 years from March 1963 to November 1967 for Buddhist education, Missionary Activities, and Buddhist studies. The Ministry of Education rejected it as it was not a national project, and Haeinsa re-applied after meeting the requirements for a national project. Printing was permitted on September 26, 1963. Under the leadership of Haeinsa, the Daejanggyeong Publishing Committee was formed, and Dongguk University President Cho Myung-gi became the publishing committee chairman, and Kim Du-ho and Park Sang-yeon supervised and implemented the printing business.
The Tripitaka Koreana, printed in 1968, is 10 sets in 8 institutions at home and abroad. The Tripitaka Koreana consists of 6,555 volumes of 1,530 kinds, 236 volumes of 16 kinds of the the Boyupan(supplement edition), and 413 volumes of 109 kinds of the Saganpan(temple publication edition). There are a total of 1,450 books, including 1,291 books of the Tripitaka Koreana, 50 books in the Boyupan, and 109 books in the Saganpan.
In 1968, among the 18 woodblocks estimated to have disappeared in 1915, 15 woodblocks from 1915, 2 woodblocks from the Daejang-dogam, and 1 woodblock from the early Joseon Dynasty were used. It is characteristic that the Daejang-dogam woodblocks engraved from the Goryeo Dynasty, which were severely damaged, and the woodblock engraved from 1937 were not used. Also, as a result of checking 48 missing parts, they were supplemented in 1915 and 1937, but not in 1968.
The printing of the Tripitaka Koreana in 1968 has great value and significance in that it contributed to domestic and foreign academics and research by printing 13 sets of the Tripitaka Koreana, the Boyupan, and the entire Saganpan.
