국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 조선 후기 여성 영웅소설에 나타나는 여성의 남성성 수행과 이를 둘러싼 젠더 정치의 서사적 재현을 분석하고 그 의미를 탐구하는 데 목적을 둔다. 조선 후기 여성 영웅소설은 남성 중심적 질서에 기반한 영웅소설의 장르 관습을 활용하여, 여성이 남성성을 수행하며 사회적 헤게모니를 쟁취하고 젠더 경계를 넘어서는 서사를 제시한다. <이학사전>의 이현경은 ‘도덕적 통치자형 남성성’을 수행하는데, 이 작품은 현경의 남성성 수행을 둘러싼 동성사회적 욕망과 긴장을 구체적으로 서사화한다. <홍계월전>의 홍계월은 ‘전쟁 영웅형 남성성’을 수행하는데, 계월을 중심에 둔 이 서사는 막강한 남성적 자본의 축적이 남성적 정체성의 유지와 보상에 어떻게 기여하는지를 서사화한다. <방한림전>의 방관주는 ‘온정적 가부장형 남성성’을 수행하는데, 이를 통해 이 작품은 가정이라는 일상 영역 내 남성성의 대안적 실천을 가시화한다. 이처럼 여성 영웅소설 작품들 속에서 재현되는 ‘여성의 남성성들’은 기존 남성성의 단순한 모방에 그치지 않고, 당대의 지배적 젠더 규범을 비판적으로 바라보면서 대안적 남성성 모델을 제안하며 젠더와 섹슈얼리티의 유동성을 드러낸다. 여성 영웅소설은 단순히 남성 중심적 질서를 수용하는 텍스트가 아니라, 젠더 규범을 재구성하고 젠더 정치의 복합성을 탐구하는 중요한 문학적 장치로 기능한다.

Female hero novels of the late Joseon dynasty represent a unique literary genre that emerged alongside societal transformations, showcasing female protagonists who actively perform masculinity and engage in intricate gender politics. This study examines three prominent texts, Yi Haksa-jeon, Hong Gye-wol-jeon, and Bang Hanlim-jeon, analyzing the ways in which female heroes perform masculinity and the social and cultural meanings generated through these performances.
Each text presents a distinct model of masculinity: the moral ruler, the martial hero, and the compassionate patriarch. These representations go beyond mere imitation of male roles, offering alternative models of masculinity that critique patriarchal structures, highlight the fluidity of gender and sexuality, and propose a reimagined social order. These novels function not only as narratives of resistance against male-centric hegemony but also as platforms for exploring the multifaceted dynamics of gender and power within the socio-political context of late Joseon.
This study delves into the structural and discursive characteristics of these narratives, illuminating the multilayered complexities of gender in late Joseon literature. It argues that female hero novels provided a critical space for readers to reconsider societal norms, offering new possibilities for social imagination that transcended the constraints of their time.
