Computer systems had distributed in each elementary school and internet network had also established. The contents of WBL(Web Based Learning) for first through fourth grade in elementary school were developed and those for fifth and sixth grade will be finished by the beginning of 2002. The result from the analysis of web-based collaborative learning indicates that this kind of learning hasn't activated yet. Because the facility for WBL were installed recently and both teachers and students don't have much experience in WBL collaborative learning. The models of collaborative learning that can be used for WBL are various. But among them, GI(Investigation Collaborative) collaborative learning model is the most appropriate one for cooperating activity and solving problems on the web because it's the model mostly lead by learners. The research shows that GI collaborative learning model is very effective for developing higher mind capability such as getting a concept, solving a problem etc. With reference to the research, I chose GI collaborative learning model as an example of web based collaborative learning cases
The presentation of GI collaborative learning cases will be very helpful for inexperienced learner because it can give an idea to solve the problem. But we need to verify by an experiment how effective the cases presented can be effective as a solving method.
The purpose of this study is to find how presentation of GI collaborative learning cases can affect the effectiveness of solving methods on the WBL. And we made some hypothesis as follows.
<Hypothesis> There might be meaningful difference in the effectiveness of solving methods between two groups. One that the cases were presented and the other that were not.
To verify the hypothesis, the subjects of this study were 74 6th grade student selected from 2 classes of elementary school located in Seoul. The subjects were classified into two groups One group(Group I) was presented with the cases of GI collaborative learning and the other group(Group II) was not. And the project for the study was done with the chapter called 'Many countries those are changing in the world' from the social textbook for second term of sixth grade.
For the process of the experiment, I developed the cases of collaborative learning and the internet site for the groups. The experiment proceded during 8 periods of the chapter for 4 weeks from October 22 to November 17, 2001. After the process, I measured the effectiveness of the solving methods and verified the mean to prove the hypothesis. The result of this study is as follows.
The hypothesis was turned out to be positive. And the means of the effectiveness of solving methods in Group I was 0.82 higher than that of the Group II. The statistic difference of mean between two groups was very meaningful.(p<0.01)
The result shows that it is much better to present the cases of the GI collaborative learning model for improving the effectiveness of solving methods.
That is to say, presenting the cases in the WBL can be a great help to make a plan for collaborative learning, to get an idea for solving the problems and to choose the way of learning. The reasons are as follow.
First, the cases of the GI collaborative learning on WBL acted as a positive feedback of learning guide owing to their own attribute. Because the GI collaborative learning cases include the idea of preceding students, which are very useful in solving problems.
Second, the learners were motivated by the GI collaborative learning cases and they study very actively. The number of articles written on the board by Group(I) was twice as many as that by Group(II). This means that the presenting cases of the preceding students would make an inexperienced learners have confidence in studying.
Third, the education by the presentation of group Investigation collaborative learning Cases on the WBL correspond with the opinion of 'Learning by modeling an experts' and the assertion about 'Obtaining a new behavior by observing and imitating other people' suggested by The modeling of the learning method presented by the preceding students is the same with the learning by observing.
As stated above, the presenting cases of GI collaborative learning on WBL enables learners to study hard with great motivation because they can study by observing the preceding students. It also gives an opportunity for learners to get an necessary idea for the problems. So it can be said that it is possible to improve the effectiveness of solving methods by presenting the cases of GI collaborative learning.
