As the quality of life becomes more important nowadays, a lot of people become more interested in approaching our space of life culturally and developing the city in which people can enjoy cultural richness in everyday life. In an effort to develop such a city, we can change the city in which we are living into the city which we want to live in and which is good to live and furthermore the city which people desire to visit, by means of place marketing, strategy of place differentiation.
This study aims to analyze the urban planning characteristics of cultural space in the perspective of place marketing and to extract planning factor of place marketing by investigating the reality of people's visiting, importance of the target place and the degree of satisfaction.
To achieve this goal, this study categorized the cultural place into 4 types. Among these types, this paper chose Daehak-ro and Insa-dong as the typical examples of type 2(cultural art district) and type 3(traditional cultural district) and conducted the survey of visitors.
Through this process we can draw the conclusions as follows.
First, in the aspect of building, external appearance and the use of the building and characterization of alley of small theaters are important planning factors in the case of cultural art district. Visitors of this district tend to form entire image of the district by the external appearance of building and the image of street which is formed by the collection of those images of building's exterior. The use of the building is important factor in preserving the image of cultural art district, and for this the plan to maintain appropriate proportion of facilities for culture and art and facilities for commercial use is required.
Preservation of Korean traditional houses and historical sites, external appearance of building, height of the building, building's use are deduced as the important planning factors in traditional cultural district. Among these, the factors that show tradition directly like Korean traditional houses and historical site appear to serve important role in this district. In contrast to the case of the cultural art district which the height of the building is not considered as important planning factor, in the case of traditional cultural district, building's height appears to be important factor to influence greatly in forming the atmosphere of the district.
Second, in cultural art district, cultural events play an significant role in forming the image of the region, and open space in which the cultural events are held is drawn as the important planning factor. Planning open space in cultural and art district, it's important to plan several open spaces hierarchically according to location and significance rather than planning one huge open space. And the system that connects these spaces to alleys of small theaters is required too.
In traditional cultural district, the street that has been formed from the past is deduced as the important planning factor. Preserving the vestige of the past, street itself is the product of the tradition, so it is important to preserve and establishing of each street's hierarchical system and systematic maintenance are needed.
Third, cultural events that have the characteristics of performing arts and also conform with the purpose of the district like theater festival should be encouraged to make cultural events develop consistently. These cultural events can lead many people's participation only if it is accompanied with open and experience-oriented program.
Cultural events of traditional cultural district should be developed to show and represent the traditional culture well, in contrast to the those of cultural art district whose scale are small but maintain a form of permanent display. It is also needed to devise the program which is creative as well as reflecting traditional culture.
Lastly, if we look closely at the degree of satisfaction with already composed cultural space, we can notice that people are most unsatisfied with the quality of the place irrespective of the types we classified above. Especially, expansion of public facilities like rest rooms and rest places is the most urgent improvement that should be made. Also, maintenance and management of street environment is needed. These planning factors should be considered not only when we first plan to make cultural space but also after finishing establishment of the cultural space. In other words, consistent care and maintenance is necessary.
