Ae-Kyung HanThis paper examines the meaning of Eppie’s choice between her own father, Godfrey Cass, and her foster father, Silas Marner from the comparison〈Silas Marner〉, the film with Silas Marner, the novel.Both the two separate plots, surrounding the two father figures, are connected with Eppie’s role as “daughter”. And the two men’s fates develop in opposite directions according to their relation to Eppie. In brief, Silas Marner, who seems to lose everything after he is betrayed by a friend and loses his gold, recovers his happiness in his love for Eppie. While Godfrey Cass, who marries Nancy Lammeter through his secret wife, Molly’s death in the snow and Dunstan’s disappearance, seems to be at the zenith of good fortune in the early part of the text, he feels his Nemesis when Eppie denies him as a father.I elucidate the meanings for Eppie’s choice; 1) the sense of morality leads her to honor Marner over Cass and to declare what she wants clearly, 2) not only Eppie’s but also Eliot’s judgment for the class is revealed in Eppie’s preference of the lower working-class Marner to the high class Cass. The faithful representation of the text in this film can be evaluated as one of the greatest achievements.
