The purpose of the study to examine the effect of parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students on academic failure tolerance and the mediating effect of ego-resilience. 412 students from middle and high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi participated for this study and in the study the three instruments were used; the parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students made by O Seongsim, Lee Jongseung(1982) and revised Kim Inok(2008), academic failure tolerance made by Kim Ayeong(2002) and reconstructed by O Huisuk(2002) and ego-resilience made by Park Eunhee(1997) and revised by Song Hyeri(2009).
The collected data was analyzed by the SPSS 23.0 statistical program; mean and standard deviation, Cronbach'α to test the reliability of each scale, Pearson’s correlation coefficient to analyze the correlations between the variables and factor analysis to verify the reliability and validity of the variables. In addition, AMOS 23.0 program was used to examine mediating effects of ego-resilience on the relationship between parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students and academic failure tolerance and the Sobel test was used to reverify the mediating effects.
Major findings of this study are as follows;
First, as a result of examining the relationship between parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students and academic failure tolerance, higher affective-antagonistic, autonomous-control, achievement-non-achievement, and rational-unreasonable parenting attitude scores were also more likely to have academic failure tolerance scores. This study result means that the more the adolescents perceive positively the parenting attitude of parents, the more likely they are to have the ability to cope more constructively with the failure situation.
Second, as a result of examining the relationship between parenting style perceived by middle and high school students and ego-resilience, higher affective-antagonistic, autonomous-control, achievement-non-achievement, and rational-unreasonable parenting style scores were also more likely to have ego-resilience scores. This study result means that the more the adolescents perceive positively the parenting attitudes of parents, the more likely they are to react positively and flexibly to adaptation in stress situations such as academic failure.
Third, as a result of examining the relationship between ego-resilience and academic failure tolerance, the more middle and high school students who are good at controlling emotion and adapt to stress with a more optimistic attitude, the more constructive attitude and reaction in academic failure.
Fourth, as a result of examining the mediating effect of ego-resilience on the relationship between parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students and academic failure tolerance, father's parenting attitude effects on academic failure tolerance through the ego-resilience. In other words, ego-resilience means complete mediation in the relationship between father's parenting attitude and academic failure tolerance.
Fifth, as a result of examining the mediating effect of ego-resilience on the relationship between parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students and academic failure tolerance, mother's parenting attitude directly affects the academic failure tolerance. In other words, ego - resilience has no mediating effect on the relationship between mother 's parenting attitude and academic failure tolerance.
In this study, because parenting attitude perceived by middle and high school students as father and mother, respectively, was analyzed, the results of this study showed the difference in the mediating effects of ego-resilience on the relationship between parenting attitude and academic failure tolerance. As a result, meaningful findings were found: fathers' parenting attitude plays a very important role in the ego-resilience of their children and mothers' parenting attitude has a powerful influence on academic failure tolerance. This means that the roles that father and the mother have in taking care of the child and the meanings of the fathers' parenting attitude and mothers' parenting attitude are different. Therefore, this study suggests that, by separating father and mother education, specialized and systematic parents education helps the korean students who have a great deal of difficult time due to the excessive expectations, interest in academic achievement and the stress of failure or frustration to improve academic failure tolerance and ego-resilience.
