“중국특색 세계사”의 현대사 인식과 서사 — ‘마르크스주의공정세계사’(2020)를 중심으로 — = Recognitions and Narratives of Contemporary Ear in the World History with Chinese Characteristics – Focusing World History Book(2020) by the Chinese Marxist Project –

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examined recognitions and narratives of the Contemporary Word History(世界現代史)(2020), compiled by the Chines Marxist project as a textbook to strengthen college students' political idea education. To that end, it was approached from the perspective of “world history with Chinese characteristics,” which China has sought since its reform and opening, while also considering perspective of the “new world history” or global history pursued both inside and outside of China.
The main feature of this book is that it views the three groups of countries (major capitalist countries, socialist countries, and developing countries) as the subjects of world history and emphasizes their interconnectedness, while including the Chinese history to go beyond the dichotomous system dividing world history with one’s own national history and for integrative understanding of world history. In this respect, this book is meaningful in that it partially pursued a ‘new world history’ in the era of globalization, breaking away from the cognitive system of the ‘Japanese version of world history’ that was structured around Europe excluding domestic history. Furthermore, it indicated that China is a “developing socialist great power”, which is a leader in the reform of the US-centered hegemonic international order, a model for modernization in developing countries, and the savior of world socialism. What is particularly noteworthy is that it attempted to strengthen Chinese characteristics and the right to academic discourse by making the conceptual language according to the world views of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping into a frame for historical awareness.
There are still problems which confronts “world history with Chinese characteristics” toward a ‘new world history’. First of all, it should innovate the view of values that identify modernity with the European modernity and go beyond the development view of history toward growth- supremacy. This book simply states that the mission of “socialism with Chinese characteristics” is to prove the highest level of productivity in history. Furthermore, it should position China's global role based on facts, but without falling into a new ‘(Sino) centrism.’ The ‘Chinese version of world history’ that disregards the foregoing cannot but remain as one for domestic use.
