국문 초록 (Abstract)

존 파울즈의 세 번째 소설인『프랑스 중위의 여자』는 메타픽션의 실험적인 글쓰기를 사용한 작품이다. 이 논문은 『프랑스 중위의 여자』에 나타난 복수결말에 대해다룬다. 이 소설에는 세 가지 종류의 결말이 등장하고 각 결말은 우리에게 많은 의미를 제시한다. 첫 번째 결말은 빅토리아 시대의 결말로 파울즈는 이 결말을 찰스의 상상이라고 말하며 의미를 축소시킴으로서 다른 결말의 문을 열어준다. 두 번째 결말은 현대적인 결말로 각 주인공들이 자신의 길을 찾기 위해 노력하며 특히 찰스는 빅토리아 시대의 방식을 따르지 않는다. 세 번째 결말이 파울즈가 제시하고자 했던 결말로 찰스는 사라의 진정한 정체성을 깨닫게 되고 새 삶과 자기 자신을 찾기 위한 여행을 떠난다. 찰스는 진정한 삶의선택과 실존을 깨닫는다. 복수 결말은 전통적인 소설 방식에서의 자유로워진 장치이다. 파울즈는 복수결말의 사용으로 전통적으로 수동적인 관중이었던 독자를 소설을 창작하는데에 참여시키고, 독자의 자유의지로 원하는 결말을 선택할 수 있게 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

John Fowles``s third novel, The French Lieutenant``s Woman, is a work using the experimental writing technique of metafiction, and a response to the problem of modern fiction. This thesis deals with the multiple endings in The French Lieutenant``s Woman. There are three kinds of endings. Each ending gives us a lot of meanings.The first ending is Victorian way of ending. Fowles opens the door to other endings by reducing the meaning of this ending. Also he said this is the kind of imagine in Charles’s mind. The second ending is modern ending. Each character tries to find their own way. Especially, Charles doesn’t follow victorian way. The third ending is the right ending which Fowles wants to suggest. In this ending, Charles begins to recognize Sarah’s real identity and finds a new way of life. He goes to travel for finding himself. Charles realizes the existence and choice of the human beings in real life. Multiple ending is the device which ensures freedom from the traditional novel form. Fowles`` use of the ending makes the reader, traditionally a passive spectator, participate in ``creating`` the novel, interact with the story, and choose the ending which is desired by the free will of the reader.
