The purpose of this study was to provide implications for the future development of Korean School Sports (KSS) through a practical analysis of Japanese school Sports (JSS). To this end, we analyzed research related to KSS and JSS to derive problems and improvements for KSS. As a result, first, compared to Japan, KSS lacked youth sports diversity and accessibility. Second, problems such as lack of rest and practice time arose due to the standardized guarantee of student athletes’ right to study. As improvements, first, a public youth sports organization should be established in Korea, the youth sports base expanded, opportunities for participation in various sports guaranteed, and costs reduced. Second, a change to flexible school sports education is needed, referring to the model of sports departments in Japanese general schools that emphasizes choice of learning content rather than uniform learning rights, and opening a sport academy for the gifted student-athletes who have already established themselves as top-level athletes.
