폴 해기스(Paul Haggis)의 범죄영화에서 나타나는 음악적 특징 연구 : 영화 <The next three days>, <In the valley of Elah>, <Crash>를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 영화 연출자이자 각본가인 폴 해기스의 작품들 중 범죄와 관련된 영화 <The next three days>, <In the valley of Elah>, <Crash>의 영화 음악을 분석하고, 이를 토대로 범죄영화의 음악적 특징을 살펴보는데 그 목적을 두고 있다.

음악 분석에 앞서 범죄영화를 정의하고 영화 연출자가 영화음악의 제작에 어떻게 관여하는지 알아보았다. 이어 해당 작품의 플롯의 구조와 유형을 살펴보고 서사구조를 네 개의 단계로 나누어 상응하는 음악을 분석함으로써, 영화의 전개에 따른 음악 서사의 공통점을 발견하는 데 초점을 맞추고자 한다.

음악 분석은 각 단계의 해당 장면에서 등장하는 음악을 구성과 선율, 화성, 리듬, 악기구성의 관점에서 분석하는 방법으로 이루어졌고, 그 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻게 되었다.

먼저 공통적으로 발견되는 일련의 표현 양식으로는 세 작품 모두 드론과 오스티나토, 단2도 음정이나 미분음의 클러스터, 복합화성과 복합리듬의 사용, 전자악기의 이용, 단순한 화성의 사용 등과 같은 기법을 일관되게 사용하여 범죄영화 특유의 긴장감을 조성하였다.

플롯의 서사 단계에 따라서는 다음과 같은 특징이 발견되었다.
첫째, 설정부에서는 단조 조성 위에 비화성음이 등장하여 영화 전체의 어두운 분위기를 암시한다. 반복되는 오스티나토를 통해 리듬이 구현되고 있다.
둘째, 작동부에서는 플롯의 유형에 따라 상이한 표현방법이 발견되지만 공통적으로 모드 스케일을 사용하고 있는 것이 특징이다.
셋째, 고조부에서는 추격장면이 등장한다. 리듬의 기초를 이루는 다양한 오스티나토 음형은 교차 배치되거나 폴리 리듬의 형태를 띄며 화성적, 리듬적인 불일치를 이룬다.
넷째, 결말부는 최소한의 악기와 음소재로 해결을 표현하지만, 음정의 마찰을 통해 긴장감을 잃지 않는다.

폴 해기스 감독의 범죄영화 음악은 플롯의 각 단계의 목적에 부합하는 특유의 표현기법을 공통적으로 재현함으로써 영화의 서사를 보조하고 확대하는 영화음악 본래의 기능을 충실히 이행하고 있다.

범죄영화는 현대의 영화 중에서도 가장 대중적인 인기를 누리는 장르이지만, 범죄영화음악에 대한 분석 및 연구사례는 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 연구가 실제로 범죄영화음악의 제작에 활용되고, 학문적으로는 다양한 장르의 영화음악 연구의 시발점이 되기를 기대해 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the soundtracks in the works of Paul Haggis, a movie director and a screenplay writer, focusing mainly on his crime movies <The next three days>, <In the valley of Elah> and <Crash>, and investigating the characteristics of the soundtracks of crime movies in general.

Prior to the musical analysis, this study intends to examine the definition of crime movies and the impact of the film director on composing the soundtracks. In order to identify common musical features synchronized with the film’s narrative and scenes, this study focuses on the sequence of four separate phases of the plot throughout the movies.

Centering on the soundtracks that appear in particular scenes of each phase, a musical analysis was conducted in terms of structure, melody, harmony, rhythm, and instruments. From this analysis, the conclusion was obtained as follows.

First, the soundtracks heightened the tension through applying drone, ostinato, minor 2nd interval, cluster of microtones, Polychords and Polyrhythms, electronic musical instrument and simple chord progression, which were common characteristics identified in all three crime films.

To be specific, the soundtracks employed consistent express techniques in each phase of the plot. In the establishment phase, the appearance of non-diatonic notes upon minor key implied a dark and menacing mood of the stories, while rhythms were implemented through repetitive ostinato. In the animation phase, the tendency of using mode scales was clearly presented over the scenes, though inconsistent express techniques were detected depending on plot patterns. In the intensification phase, which includes chasing scenes, various ostinato patterns were juxtaposed or poly-rhythmized and formed harmonic and rhythmic discordance. Finally, the resolution phase implied resolution of the conflict by using the least number of instruments and tone-material, whereas frictional intervals contributed to maintain the tension until the end of the movies.

The soundtracks of the crime movies directed by Paul Haggis employed unique and consistent express techniques by each phase of the plot, acting as key attributes to work with the images to create the desired effect and to magnify the film’s narrative.

This study suggests diverse music techniques used in the crime movies, thus expects to contribute to prolific production of soundtracks for particular genre, and intends to facilitate a leap-forward development of film music research in a wide range of movie genre.
