This paper deals with English unmarked it-clefts, with contrastive focus in it. There have been two approaches to interpreting the contrast: semantic one based on a set of alternatives (Ė. Kiss 1988, among others) vs. pragmatic one based on conversational implicature (Zimmermann 2007, among others). The paper is an eclectic account of the contrastiveness effects, as I call, that lexical or discoursal entities in it-clefts show in relation to its previous context. As for occasionally confusing treatments of information status (old or new) of pronouns such as 'he' in the focus position of it-clefts, I will claim that those elements should not be treated as simply 'new' (as in Prince 1978), but rather treated as 'discourse-old' in the sense of Prince (1992), on the one hand, and as 'relational new', as I term, in the sense of Lambrecht (1994), on the other hand. I conclude that the relational new information generated by it-clefts in relation to the previous context can be interpreted as contrastiveness effects to the extent that the speaker assumes the hearer feels conflicts between the relational new information and the information from his or her expectation from the previous context or its related common knowledge.
