『서경(書經)』의 호생지덕(好生之德)에 관한 연구(硏究) = A Study on Hosaengjideok (好生之德) in "Shu Ching (『書經)』)"

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 날로 심각해져 가고 있는 생명 경시 풍조의 실상을 살펴보고, 『書經』에서 제시하고 있는 호생지덕(好生之德)의 기원과 내용 및 호생지덕의 함양방법 등을 통해 유교의 생명 존중 사상이 현대 사회에서 어떻게 활용될 수 있을 것인가에 대한 연구이다. 유교에서는 우주 만물의 근본 원리를 태극이라 한다. 이 태극은 모든 사물의 공통된 근거로서의 하나의 태극도 존재하지만, 개개 사물에 내재하는 개별화된 태극도 있다. 우주 만물 전체를 아우르는 태극도 있지만, 모든 존재 각각에도 똑같이 태극이 품부되어 있다는 것이다. 태극의 측면에서 보면 인간을 비롯한 지구상의 모든 생명체는 각각의 태극을 구비한 소중한 존재이다. 『書經』에서 제시하고 있는 호생지덕은 만물을 살리고자 하는 하늘의 마음을 실현하는 일이다. 호생지덕에는 인의예지의 덕이 내재되어 있다. 인의예지 본성에서 곧고 바르게 발현된 본마음으로 보게 되면 내 마음과 다른 사람의 마음은 하나가 될 수 있다. 하나의 마음에서 보게 되면 자신의 삶 뿐만 아니라 다른 사람의 삶도 소중하게 여기기 때문에 자신이 힘들고 하기 싫은 일은 남도 하기 싫다는 사실을 알기 때문에 남에게 미루지 않고 자신이 솔선수범하여 수고를 아끼지 않게 되며, 반대로 내가 하고 싶은 일은 남도 하고 싶어 하는 일이라는 것을 알기에 다른 사람을 먼저 배려하게 된다. 남을 나처럼 자연스럽게 사랑하게 된다. 법에 의한 판결을 내리더라도 결과만 보고 판단하지 않고, 그러한 결과가 나올 수밖에 없었던 원인과 경과를 참고로 하여 누구나 공감하고 납득이 될 수 있는 판결을 내릴것이다. 호생지덕이 발휘되면 정치도 국민의 삶을 윤택하게 하고 신바람 나는 방향으로 나아갈 것이며, 다른 나라 사람을 대할 때에도 겉으로 드러난 모습으로 대하지 않고 인간이 공통적으로 지니고 있는 한마음으로 사랑하고 도울 것이다. 인류애가 확장되면 주변의 동물이나 식물도 나와 똑같이 살고 싶어 하는 속성과 살려는 의지가 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 그 결과 살아있는 생명체를 사랑하고 차마 죽이지 못하는 마음이 나오게 된다. 생명을 유지하기 위해 음식을 먹더라도 음식물이 되어 준 생명체에 대한 미안한 마음과 고마운 마음으로 음식을 섭취하게 될 것이다. 생명 존중에 대한 생각은 여기에서 출발해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the reality of the ever-growing life-depreciation trend, and discusses how the thought of life respect in Confucianism can be utilized in modern society through the origins and contents of Hosaengjideok (好生之德; the grace of sparing a person condemned to death) proposed by Shu Ching 『(書經)』, and the way of cultivating Hosaengjideok(好生之德). In Confucianism, the fundamental principle of the universe is called the Taegeuk(太極). There is also a Taegeuk(太極) as a common ground of all things, but there is also an individualized Taegeuk(太極) that is inherent in individual things. There is also a Taegeuk(太極) that covers the entire universe, but it is equally true that every individual Taegeuk(太極) exists. From the perspective of the Taegeuk(太極), all living things on Earth including human beings are precious beings with individual Taegeuk(太極). Hosaengjideok (好生之德) Presented in "Shu Ching" is to realize the mind of heaven that wants to save all things. Hosaengjideok(好生之德) has a virtue of Inuiyeji (humanity, righteousness, propriety and wisdom of Confucian). If one sees oneself in a straight and correctly expressed mind in the nature of Inuiyeji(仁義禮智), one`s mind and the mind of others can be one. If I see it in my heart, I value not only my own life but also the life of others. Because I know that others do not want to do things which I do not want to do, I do not lay a burden to do others but I take the lead not to spare my efforts. On the contrary, because I know that something I want to do is the thing which others want to do, I consider others first. I love others naturally like me. Even if a judgment is made under the law, it will not be judged by the result alone, and it will be judged by anyone to agree and understand with reference to the cause and the process that the result should come out. When Hosaengjideok(好生之德) is exercised, politics will enrich the lives of the people, and will make a new direction, and will treat people from other nations and will not treat them as they are exposed to the outside world, but will love and help them with a single common human being. As humanity grows, I would see that the animals and plants around me find that they want to live just like me and have a will to live. As a result, I should love living creatures and cannot kill them. Even if you eat food to maintain life, you will eat food with feeling sorry and gratitude for life that has become food. The idea of respecting life should start here, which is also why we should pay attention to Confucian Hosaengjideok(好生之德) today.
