Suicide is a social issue in Korea and in many other countries. There are so many possible factors influencing individuals’ decision to commit a suicide but not much empirical research has been conducted on this regards in South Korea. This study investigated the factors affecting suicide risks among South Korean citizens based on the general strain theory. As the theory suggests, strain factors and conditional factors were measured as exogenous variables to influence citizens’ suicide risks via negative emotions. That is, endogenous variables included negative emotions and suicide risks for structural equation modeling analyses. Structural equation modeling analyses of the random sample of 1,599 adult citizens revealed that strain factors(e.g., perceptions of social unfairness, social conflict) and conditional factors(e.g., social bond, self-efficacy) significantly influenced negative emotions (e.g., depression, anxiety) which affected significantly citizens’ risks of suicides. Findings suggested that general strain theory could serve as an important theory to explain citizens’ risks of suicide among South Korean citizens. Policy implications were suggested based on the findings.
