This is a study analyzing the influence of Chinese farces on Korean farces. The possibilities of Chinese farces coming into Korea and having influences on Korean farces are seen in a few directions as follows. 1)The books containing the early Chinese farces were used as prerequisite books for the exam of selecting the officials. 2)<太平廣記> having about 400 farce stories had been widly read among Koreans since 11 centuries and the stories being influenced by those Chinese farces were often seen in our farces. 3)The writings quoted from Chinese farce books <說유> and <種離葫蘆> were found in our bibliographies and traces quoting other Chinese farces were seen in our farces.
Upon these possibilities I compared 20 stories in <古今笑叢> with Chinese stories and found out that the motif of our stories was influenced by that of Chinese stories but that the contents were changed and recreated using these kinds of format. 1)The addition of a new episode. 2)The lengthening or adding of the content. 3)The deletion or change of an episode. 4)The changing of plots or expressions.
Considering those manifacts we discussed above, we see that about 10% of the stories in <古今笑叢> were influenced by Chinese stories and that those stories were changed and recreated into our Korean style of farces to a degree.
