우즈베키스탄 ‘민족국가의 발명’? = 우즈벡 종족-민족 정체성의 구성 요소들

국문 초록 (Abstract)

독립 후 우즈베키스탄은 우즈벡 종족-민족의 민족 국가를 지향해 왔다. 이 논문에서는 우즈벡 종족-민족 정체성의 구성 부분들 가운데, 우즈벡 종족-민족의 뿌리, 언어ㆍ종교 정체성, 소비에트 정체성, 마할라 제도 등 네 가지 요소들을 분석한다. 우즈베키스탄의 권력 엘리트는 심리적 귀속과 안정감을 심어줄 유구한 전통과 기원을 가진 우즈벡 종족-민족 정체성을 발견ㆍ발명함으로써, 국가와 정치체제의 정당성을 확보하고자 하였다. 권력 엘리트가 주도한 근대적 민족국가 형성 기획은 우즈벡 역사와 민족의 사회적ㆍ문화적 재구성 작업이자 우즈베키스탄‘민족국가의 발명’작업이었다고 할 수 있다. 적어도 지금까지는 우즈베키스탄의 국가 정체성 형성 과정에서 우즈벡 종족-민족 정체성은 유연하고 개방적이며 수용적 특성을 보여 주고 있다. 그러나 정체성의 성격을 단정하기엔 이르다. 우즈벡 종족-민족 형성과 우즈베키스탄 국가 건설은 여전히 진행 중이며 이 질문에 대한 대답은 열려 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since the independence, Uzbekistan has made great efforts to construct a nation-state based on the Uzbek ethno-national identity. Among the components of the Uzbek ethno-national identity this paper deals with the following four aspects: invention of the Uzbek ethno-national roots, linguistic and religious identity, Soviet identity, and the mahallization of Uzbek society. The Uzbek power elite has tried to get the legitimacy of political regime and the state by discovering and inventing the Uzbek ethno-national identity rooted in the old tradition, which provides the Uzbeks with a sense of belonging and stability. The modern nation-state building project driven by the Uzbek power elite can be called the “the invention of Uzbek nation-state”, the social and cultural reconstruction of Uzbek history and nation. Up to now at the least the Uzbek ethno-national identity in the process of the formation of the Uzbek state identity has shown flexible, open-minded, and inclusive features. It is, however, too early to make a conclusion about the characteristics of the Uzbek ethno-national identity. The Uzbek nation and state building process is going on and the answer to this question is open.
