The Saengwhang(笙簧) is a music instrument which could play two notes or more notes and handed from Tri-Kingdom period to Joseon dynasty. The instrument was used not only for the Court music but for folk music in Joseon dynasty.
"Suryongeum" is a representative piece for the instrument. There were two recorded materials by the master musicians: Gim, Taesup and Chung, Jaeguk.
I tried to analyse these pieces on their melodic structures, traditional harmony and multi-phonic skills compared with a music book written by Gim, Gisu.
The results are as follow:
The basic melodic structures by two musicians are not quite different from the music book.
In the piece played by Gim, Taesup, ornaments were used frequently and this skill makes this instrument versatile and he plays his own melody compare with the music book.
In the piece played by Chung, Jaeguk, He plays less ornaments than Gim, Taesup and in the fourth chapter and at ending, he plays his own unique melody.
In the performance by the Saegnhwang, there were unique skills that could make harmony. I call these ,"daseong jubeop", - multi-phonic skill.
In multi-phonic skill, two musicians had some differences. Gim,Taesup used eseong jubeop (skill playing two note at the same time) principally. At a note “hwang(黃)”, this note was played alone or with octave high. At a note “Tae(太)”, this note was played alone or with octave high. At a note “Jung (仲)”, this note was played with perfect fourth or octave. At a note “Im(林)”, this note was played with octave. At mu(無), this note was played with octave. In the process of melody, he played this rule regularly, but at emphasized zone he used his own unique skill. And he used ornaments on mono-tone principally.
Chung, Jaeguk used eseong jubeop or samseong jubeop (skill playing three note at the same time ) in daseong jubeop.
In eseong jubeop, he used perfect fourth, perfect fifth and octave and in samseong jubeop, he used perfect fourth with perfect fifth, perfect fifth with perfect fourth and octave with perfect fourth. He used these skills by the process of melody and length. And ornaments were used in mono-tone, eseong jubeop or samseong jubeop.
By this study, I can see that the melody and daseong jubeop of the Sangwhang were inherited by some musicians and were not quite different from the music book written by Gim, Gisu
I hope that this study would be helpful for more studies about Saengwhang.
