Today's society is faced with rapid changes into knowledge-informatization, specialization, and pluralism. Such social changes require talented professionals with diversity and creativity. So education should emphasize changes which can develop and improve individuals' talent and aptitude to the utmost to cope with new age.
Today's educational reality is characterized by excessive extracurricular courses and public education that is losing its functions due to the focus on entrance exams based on knowledge. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Education brought private education out of school into public one within schools to reduce educational expenditure and implemented extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activities for music to make a field for whole-man education by helping students develop their talent and individuality.
This study aims at examining the actual condition of extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activities for music to determine how such activities are implemented. A survey on extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activities for music was conducted among 12 teachers in charge of speciality-aptitude education of music, 20 music instructors, and 599 students participating in the education at 11 elementary schools in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province.
The results were as follows:
First, teachers and music instructors were keenly needing extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activities for music at elementary schools.
Second, although the Ministry of Education offered extracurricular programs as a means of helping parents reduce private education expenditure by bringing private education out of school into public one within schools, elementary school teachers and music instructors in Jinju rarely made positive responses to reduction in private education fees.
Third, extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activity programs for music concentrated on the wind music.
Fourth, incumbent teachers somewhat agreed that 'it is difficult to employ a competent instructor.'
Fifth, it is necessary to be equipped with learning tools or musical instruments necessary for extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activities for music.
Sixth, it is necessary to secure classrooms solely for music.
Like all educational activities, success of educational activities cannot be determined by efforts by only one part of schools, teachers, instructors, parents, or students. Interest and help by people concerned in all educational activities will be able to provide better instruction and ideal 'good instruction.' This study is expected to assist extracurricular speciality-aptitude education activities for music.
