서사민요 연행에 나타나는 서사 전개방식의 원리 = Principles of Narration used in the Performance of Narrative Folk Songs

This paper investigates principles of narration used in the performance of narrative folk songs. Three major factors that generate variations in narrative songs have been explored; the narrator-singer's attitude toward the characters, the narrator-singer's perception of events, and the narrator-singer's adaptation to the performance circumstances. The results of this research are as follows; First, most of main characters are women who are in a position similar to the narrator-singer of the narrative songs. The narrator-singer becomes immersed in the main character, and distances herself from the antagonists of the narrative songs. In this case, narrative songs have a lyrical tendency. Second, the narrator-singer does not explain causes and effects in detail, but she unfolds stories dramatically, lingering on impressive events and leaping over unimportant ones. Lastly, the narrator-singer extends stories into long narrative songs with a mixture of various motifs, or she abstracts stories, turning them into short lyrical songs, depending on the performance circumstances.
The narrative songs have been transmitted and recreated with various narration methods according to the narrator-singer's attitude toward the characters, the narrator-singer's perception of events, and the narrator-singer's adaptation to the performance circumstances. The narrative songs have become the poetry of daily life through which ordinary women communicate their emotions and experiences with each other.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 서사민요의 서술자-창자가 서사민요를 연행하는 데 적용하는 서사 전개방식의 원리를 발견해내는 것을 목적으로 이루어졌다. 서사민요 연행에 나타나는 서사 전개의 원리를 세 가지 - 인물에 대한 태도, 사건에 대한 인식, 연행상황에의 적응 - 측면에서 살펴본 결과 다음과 같은 원리를 찾아낼 수 있었다. 첫째, 서사민요 대부분의 주인물은 서술자-창자와 비슷한 처지에 있는 여성으로, 서술자-창자는 이 여성의 입장과 시각에서 주인물에게 몰입하고 상대인물에게 거리를 두며 사건을 전개한다. 둘째, 서사민요의 서술자-창자는 서사의 전개 과정을 인과적으로 상세하게 서술하기보다, 충격적이고 인상적인 핵심사건을 중심으로 건너뛰기와 지연하기를 통해 극적으로 전개한다. 셋째, 서사민요의 서술자-창자는 연행상황에 적절하게 대응하여 여러 서사 갈래의 모티프를 결합해 장편 서사로 확장하기도 하고, 서정적으로 압축해 단편적으로 부르기도 한다. 이처럼 서사민요는 서술자-창자의 노래 속 인물에 대한 태도, 사건에 대한 인식, 연행상황에 따라 서정적, 극적 경향을 띠며 매우 다양한 방식으로 창작, 전승되면서 이를 부르고 듣는 사람들 간의 경험과 감정을 소통하는 생활서사시로 자리 잡을 수 있었다.
