과학 다큐멘터리는 어떻게 구성되는가 : EBS <뇌로 보는 인간>의 “섹스” 편의 콘텐츠 변화를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

과학 다큐멘터리는 과학 대중화를 촉진하고 매개하는 중요한 매체이다. 본 논문은 2020년에 방영해서 큰 화제를 불러일으킨 EBS의 <뇌로 보는 인간> 다큐멘터리 5부작 중에서 “섹스” 편의 제작 과정을 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 다큐멘터리 제작과정에 초점을 맞추면 일반적으로 ‘사실’로 받아들여지는 과학 다큐멘터리가 실제로는 수정, 보완, 타협의 여러 단계를 거치면서 만들어진다는 것을 알 수 있으며, 다큐멘터리에서 다루는 과학이 불변의 사실이라기보다 경합하는 지식들 중에서 선별된 것임을 엿볼 수 있다. 특히 “섹스” 편은 남/녀의 섹슈앨러티의 차이를 강조하는 진화심리학에 기초한 내용이 내부 제작팀의 토론을 통해 크게 바뀌고, 결국 전통적인 진회심리학의 해석에서 보면 ‘이단적’이라고 볼 수 있을 정도로 남/녀 섹슈앨러티의 평등에 토대를 둔 스토리 라인을 채택해서 만들어 졌다. 이 과정을 분석하는 본 논문은 과학 다큐멘터리의 사회적 구성성을 드러낼 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The science documentary is an important medium that promotes and mediates the public understanding of science. This paper aims to analyze the production process of the documentary "Sex" of EBS"s <Neuro Sapiens> series, which aired in 2020 and attracted much attention. If we focus on the documentary production process, we can see that scientific documentaries that are generally identified as "facts" are actually constructed through various stages of revision, supplementation, and compromise. It can be said that the knowledge it presents was selected from among competing knowledges. In particular, the major story of the “Sex” part, which originally planned to be based on evolutionary psychology that emphasizes the difference between male/female sexuality, is greatly changed through the discussions in the production team, and in the end, the team adopted a story line based on the equality of male/female sexuality, which can be seen as a ‘heresy’ from the perspective of evolutionary psychology. This paper, which explores this production process in depth, highlights the socially constructed nature of science documentaries.
