<혜성가>와 적극적 방어로서의 언술 전략

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 <혜성가>와 그 배경기사가 단순히 주술이나 무가가 아니라는 점에서 비롯되었다. 만약 이 노래와 배경기사가 그러한 의도에서 서술된 것이라면 이는 다른 편목에 수록되었어야 한다. 그러나 <혜성가>와 그 배경기사는 분명히 <감통>편에 수록되어 있다. 잘 알다시피 <감통>편은 부처의 신이한 감응에 관한 내용으로 구성되어 있으므로 이와 상관성이 있다는 것이다. 그런 점에서 <혜성가>와 그 배경기사가 왜병의 침입을 부인하는 방어의 의미를 수반하고 있다고 이해되는 것은 이 때문이다. 대개 방어는‘남이나 적이 침입하는 것을 막아냄’또는‘다른 개체의 공격이나 상해에 대하여 스스로를 지키려는 개체의 행동과 그 행동적 방위’를 가리키는 광의의 의미를 가진다. 여기서의 방어는 모든 수단을 동원한 자기 또는 단체 나아가 국가까지를 아우르는‘막아냄’의 개념이다. 개체 간의 싸움이나 단체 간의 저항, 국가 간의 전쟁을 포괄하는 함의의 방어라는 의미다. 그런데 <혜성가>와 그 배경기사에서의 방어는 그것이 실제적 전투와는 다소 거리가 있다. 즉, 분명히 왜병의 침입이 있었음에도 불구하고 그것을 적극적으로 부인하고 있기 때문이다. 그러한 이유로 주문 내지 주술적 표현의 한 형태로 이해되는 데는 분명한 한계가 있다. 따라서 <혜성가>와 그 배경기사는 부처가 엄연히 응험하는 이 나라에 감히 왜구 따위가 들어올 수 없다는 적극적 방어로서의 언어적 표현이라는 것이다. 그것이 가능할 때 <혜성가>의 배경기사에서 보이는 혜성의 출현과 융천사의 혜성 퇴치, 왜병의 환국이 자연스런 하나의 이야기로 이해될 수 있다. 그리고 노래에서 왜병의 침입이 완전히 부인되고 있는 사실 즉,‘건달파’를‘왜병’으로,‘길쓸별’을‘혜성’으로 잘못 판단하고 있다고 적극적으로 부인하고 있는 태도 또한 이해될 수 있는 것이다. 그래야만 일연이‘융천사 혜성가 진평왕대’조에서 의도적으로 강조하고 있는 신성하고 영험한 불국토에 대한 자부심과 긍지를 확인할 수 있다.
