A Qualitative Case Study on Collaboration Between Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Systems

Needs of youth with mental health in the juvenile justice systems are escalating. To learn more about the unique needs of these youth and their families' experiences in securing mental health services, we conducted 72 interviews with 18 youth and their parents, mental health case managers, and juvenile justice workers in a state in the US. To capture the complexities of each case within the dual systems, case summaries were created. Analyses yielded critical findings describing a positive relationship between collaboration and outcome where cases with evidence of collaboration were more likely to be successful regarding the outcomes for the youth. This research presents the importance of collaboration needed to effectively serve youth in both systems. The central value of collaboration to effective service is highlighted. Additional research is needed to continue to expand the validity of this study. Implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.
