While a number of methods have been devised and used in order to measure poverty, a significant effort has not been made on the classification of poverty measurements. As a result, the classification has been made mainly on the basis of researchers' own criteria or the characteristics of poverty measurement methods. However, it is time to consider a refined classification of poverty measurements, based on scientific criteria, because it enables us to understand them clearly.
Given the context, this study explores whether there is a way in which a new classification can be established. Following the argument of Ringen (1988), who showed that there could be a way to build up a new classification of poverty measurements, using an income and/or a deprivation as indicators of poverty, this study discusses an introduction of a new classification.
This study shows that there is a need to study and introduce a new classification of poverty measurements for the development of poverty measurements and research in Korea.
