국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서는 칼더의 전 생애를 시간대별, 장르별로 살펴봄으로서 그의 독특한 작품세계에 대한 이해를 높이고자 하는데 목적을 둔다.
칼더가 현대미술분야에 있어 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 것으로 평가되는 키네틱조각의 형성배경을 산업혁명에 의한 기술발전과 사회 환경의 변화에서 찾아보고 칼더가 예술가의 길을 걷게 된 원인을 그의 성장기에 영향을 받은 특이한 예술가집안의 분위기와 연관시켜 살펴보았다. 그리고 칼더 작품전반에 걸쳐 나타나는 다양한 작품영역의 변화를 주위의 예술가들이나 환경에 의한 영향을 근거로 하여 고찰해보고 동시 다발적으로 진행된 여러 장르의 작업을 합리적으로 연구하기위해 분야별로 나누어 시간대별로 서술하였다.
특히 칼더의 작품들 중 대표적이라 할 수 있는 모빌과 스테이빌을 중심적으로 다루었으며 1960년 이후부터 열정적으로 제작한 모빌과 스테이빌 공공조각은 장을 따로 분리하여 논하였다.
알렉산더 칼더는 20c의 혁신적인 조각가이다.
그는 평생에 걸쳐 열린 자세로 자신의 작품세계를 구축하였으며 새로운 요소를 받아들이는 것에 주저함이 없었다.
파리에서 예술가의 길을 걷기 시작하면서 주변의 현대 미술가들에게서 많은 영향을 받아 들였고 이를 이용하여 자신만의 고유한 작품영역을 창조해 냄으로써 당당히 20c 현대미술의 선구자중 한명이 되었다.
칼더는 그의 작품전반에 걸쳐 전통을 거부하고 새로운 것에 대한 실험과 도전을 계속 이어 나갔다. 이러한 시도는 칼더에게 다양한 작품영역을 제공해주었으며 현대미술에 있어 움직임이라는 새로운 언어를 더하는 결과를 가져왔다.
단선드로잉, 철사조각, 모터모빌, 바람모빌, 수은샘, 스테이빌과 같은 다양한 순수미술작품뿐만 아니라 모형서커스공연, 장신구디자인, 비행기 및 자동차 도색디자인, 벽지디자인 등 그가 흥미 있는 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 작업을 진행하였으며 이 과정에서 여러 가지 새로운 재료들이 현대미술 속에 편입되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of the thesis is to make people easily understand Calder's unique art world by classifying his art pieces in chronological order and genre.
I'd like to figure out the relation between advance in technology and changes in social environment through the Industrial Revolution, and kinetic art, a new genre of modern art, which was largely influenced by Calder. I'd like to study the reasons that Calder became an artist. He was affected in his youth by his typical artist family.
I'd like to consider the changes of his various art careers through all his art pieces which were affected by his artist friends and his surrounding environment. For the research, I scrutinized, in time and genre, many of his art forms which were created simultaneously by Calder. I focused on mobiles and stables which were his major works. I made one special chapter about his public sculpture program which he'd eagerly done from the 1960's to his death.
Alexander Calder is one of the most innovative sculptors in the 20th Century. In his whole life, he was open minded, making his own sculptures. He also never hesitated to accept new art trends. Staying in Paris, he started an artist career. He was influenced by his modern artist friends so that he created his own art world. No one could deny that he was one of the modern art leaders in the 20th Century.
Calder rejected the tradition of classical art through all his works and kept trying challenges and experiments in the new waves in art. His efforts to attempt new trends provided him with various and wide range views in the art field. He invented a new language, movement, in modern art. He did not only pure art works, such as Single-Line Drawings, Wire Sculptures, Motor Driven Mobiles, Wind driven Mobiles, a Mercury Fountain, and Stables, but also commercial art, such as Model Circus Shows, jewelery design, air plain and automobile color design, and wall paper design. He did what he was interested in, which made his works in diverse art fields progress, and used in his sculptures many new materials that were added in modern art .
