Between 1910 and 1918 Chunwon(pen name of Kwangsoo Lee)wrote 15 poems, 10 novels, one play, 6 travels, 6 informal essays, 3 critical essays, 9 current comments and 14 formal essays; as it were, he wrote 64 pieces of 8 different kinds. Regardless of his writing styles, he wrote his works with the national spirit, which, he believed, might be considered the edification of "affection". Accordingly most of his writings except poems were written for the purpose of edifying "affection".
Chunwon was very conscious of affection and tried hard to edify it because he had never enjoyed his parents' affections. The way of living of his father and forefathers was based upon Confucian ideas. Only forcing severe duties, it lacked family affections. Therefore, he emphasized on affectionate living and rejected the Confucian way of living. He idealized the western way of family life in which only two generations live together. Such being his ideas, he always tried to affections in his novels.
His stress on self-consciousness and autonomy of "affection" must not be misunderstood as an advocacy of free love.
