The objective of this study is to examine and analyze the landscape preference of non-Jeju people, Jeju people, and foreigners taking photographs on the ground and mid-air. This study targeted a total of 18 Oreum photos that represent Jejudo. The following are the results.
The result of preference assessment of a total of 84 pieces of Oreum sceneries showed Group 1 (non-Jeju people) with 4.93, Group 2 (local people from Jeju) with 5.22, wherein the total average of local people was 5.11, while Group 3's (foreigners) average was 5.54. Foreigners tended to have a relatively high preference for these sceneries.
In general, the highest assessment value was given to Biyangdo Bugam’s scenery of Oreum, which received an average score of 8 (7.60), and the next highest one was Scene 58 with a score of 7.59, and Scene 48 with 7.35. Hence, Seongsan Ilchoolbong, Biyangdo and Songaksan, etc. were confirmed as comparative to the beautiful representative scenery of Jejudo.
ANOVA and Duncun’s multiple range tests were used to ascertain the significant degree of preference assessment values between the three assessment groups. Results showed that the statistical significance was 63, so the difference among groups was accepted. The noticeable thing is that out of 21 Oreums whose statistical significance between assessment groups is not recognized, aerial views of the Bugam were not included. Moreover, out of the 21 Oreum sceneries, only three Oreum scenes surpassed the total average 5.34, namely Scene16, Scene78, and Scene 29. Excluding Minoreum and Sangumboori, the assessment value of the rest of the 16 sceneries was high, so they all showed a definite preference trend to vistas of Oreums viewed from the air, and this trend was distinct to the foreigners’ group. Given the scene overlooking the ground and Gumboori of Sangumboori, this trend was even more evident.
Analysis of the viewers’ preference for certain form factors was done to understand the variables affecting their preference for sceneries of Oreums. Results confirmed the statistical significance as an independent variable only at the highest slope (X3) regardless of the assessment group, and the preference analysis according to the number of photos indicated that a long shot view showing the entire Oreum had a negative effect in the preference of all assessment groups. Given that a close-up view is a factor having a negative effect on the preference of foreigners, data suggests that the vistas of Oreums perceived from a great distance are more preferred compared to those perceived from close point of view. Also, the images of seawater and Jeju horses are shown to be the most positive factors in enhancing preference.
