Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationship between basic psychological needs for dance perceived by the elderly and self-esteem, depression, and psychological happiness. Methods 375 elderly people participating in dance activities were conveniently sampled, and structural equation model analysis was conducted using the Smart PLS 4.0 statistical program. Result First, it was found that the higher the elderly perceive the basic psychological desire for dance, the higher the positive self-esteem and the lower the negative self-esteem. Second, basic psychological needs for dance can increase psychological happiness, but depression has no significant relationship. Third, it was found that self-esteem partially mediated in basic psychological needs and psychological happiness for dance, and depression completely mediated. Conclusion It has been found that if the elderly perceive high basic psychological needs in dance activities, self-esteem improves, which can help them lead a healthy and happy life. In the future, dance culture as a healthier leisure activity should be expanded by developing and distributing dance programs for the elderly.
