The Louvre Museum Exhibition―a successful exhibition that had been held in National Museum of Korea in 2006 and attracted lots of visitors―was held again in Seoul Arts Center, in May, 2012, 6 years after its first exhibition. In addition, Seoul Arts Center held the exhibition of Orsay Museum collections, which owns world famous paintings and had been introduced into Korea in 2007, in June, 2011, 4 years after its first introduction into Korea. The exhibition of color magician Chagall, which had created a great boom in 2004, was held again in Seoul in 2010 and attracted more than 600,000 visitors.
Today, the importance of culture and art is ever emphasized than any other periods and culture- and art-related industry, such as performance and exhibition, grows up rapidly. As the desire to enjoy cultural life for the improvement of life quality increases, and interests in child education of better quality enhance, leisure activity of educational goals increases naturally and activates related areas, such as exhibition industry.
As mentioned in the above, among numberless exhibitions of painting that take the lead in the exhibition industry, special exhibitions, which have such titles as 'international exhibition' and 'blockbuster exhibition', have created booms recently. They are exhibitions of which themes are such famous artists to the messes as Picasso, Van Gogh and Andy Warhol and play the role of heightening visitors' curiosity and sense of awe.
In order to successfully hold and develop specially planned exhibitions that come to the fore, it is necessary to group after a variety of strategies. However, this study examined the exclusively concerned persons (actors) who firsthand took part in holding and hosting exhibitions, by recognizing that their cooperation was unsatisfactory in reality, and looked into the actual status of their networks, thus attempting to establish a model.
Based on the purpose of study, the conception of exhibition, including special exhibition, was examined via literature and the trend of precedent studies was looked into. In addition, as a theoretical tool of looking for a network model, the discussion on network theories and trend of studies were examined. Regarding the examination of network theories, such components of a network as actors, interaction between actors and resulted connection structure were examined in particular. It was because they were such theoretical backgrounds that were positively needed in the analysis of connectivity and magnitude of special exhibition. In addition, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), an analytic method, was examined.
As for the current status of special exhibition in Korea, the investigator analyzed the outline of current status of exhibition, held for the period from 2000 to 2011, and looked into such examples as Picasso Exhibition held in 2006, Orsay Exhibition held in 2007 and Picasso and Modern Art Exhibition held in 2010.
In this study, the analytic frame of criteria was presented focusing on such components of a network as actors and their interaction, and then a model for the establishment of network system of special exhibition was worked out based on network actors's extent of influence, cooperative relations of actors and magnitude of interaction between actors. In addition, a questionnaire survey of 30 specialists was carried out twice.
As analytic methods of data, several statistical techniques were used. In order to examine the distribution of respondents, frequency analysis was utilized. In order to examine actors' mutual relations and its magnitude, mean values were calculated. In order to examine the magnitude of player's relative influence in the network of special exhibition, Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) was applied. Study findings are as follows:
The results of primary examination of specialists presented such main players as planners, venue providers, sponsors, supporters, mass media, transporters and exhibition hall design, and the results of secondary examination presented the fact that the above seven players had positive cooperative relations among them. As for individual actors' magnitude of influence in a network, a sponsor had biggest influence upon special exhibition and it was followed by a supporter, mass media, a planner, a venue provider, exhibition hall design and a transporter in order. Since the network type of special exhibition depends on main actors for its decision-making, it seems to be similar to the model of policy community.
Based on the above study findings, study suggestions and future tasks are presented as follows: In order for a special exhibition to be developed more efficiently, it is necessary to examine the influence of main actors' concerned person networks before planning special exhibition of large scales, first of all. Second, since trustful sponsors and supporters are needed in carrying out smooth and successful exhibition, it is necessary to put every effort in securing them. Third, since to have the simple ability of planning is insufficient for a planner of specially planned exhibition, he or she must cultivate the ability of communication and liaison with which he or she can secure communication and cooperation with influential actors. Fourth, it is necessary for a planner or a planning company which is specialized in specially planned exhibition to establish a full-time network of influential persons concerned, namely actors. One of important factors for the success or failure of specially planned exhibition is to establish a network of main players with which interaction among them is possible always, though it is formed loosely.
This study is meaningful in that it examined the main actors of special exhibition and their relations in holding it, the area which has not been studied so far. In addition, by analyzing actors' influence via a questionnaire survey of specialists who were currently active in business circles, a network model could be worked out. Implications from the study can be used as a correct index for rapidly growing exhibition industry of arts and as basic data to increase the competitiveness of special exhibition, held in Korea.
