Effect of gamma-irradiation on the anaerobic fermentation and aerobic oxidation in yeast cells were studied, and the consuming of substrates(cellular carbohydrate) have been determined by fractionation of them. The experimental results are as follows;
(1) Cellular carbohydrate leaks to outside from the irradiated cell, the loss of
carbohydrate reaches eleven times much than that of control.
(2) Total carbohydrate and trehalose in the irradiated yearst cell decreased much
more than that of non-irradiated as the result of accelerated metabolism.
(3) The water content of irradiated cell is 20% more than non-irradiated cell, it
may be due to the disturbance of cell membrane.
(4) Glycogen is less consumed than trehalose in both irradiated and control, but the amount of alkali soluble glycogen increased a little.
(5) RNA-ribose, mannan and glucan are synthesized in both irradiated and control
cells.
(6) It is suggested that γ-irradiation of 240 Kr. doses to the cell of baker's yeast does not disturb the carbohydrate metabolism but makes change in cell membrane.
