꾸뛰리에 찰스제임스의 패션 조형창출 사례연구 = A case study on fashion shape creation of couturier Charles James

A famous American couturier Charles James(1906~1978) of the 20th century is known as a master of clothing construction. Charles James contributed greatly to the fashion development, touching and inspiring his contemporary representative fashion designers such as Paul Poiret and Christian Dior. Paul Poiret, who saw the first Paris show of James in 1937, put a high valuation on him complimenting that the achievements James made with a pair of sewing scissors was what he achieved with colors. And Christian Dior said his new look had been inspired by Charles James. Also in 2010, John Galliano, a head designer of Dior, said the S/S collection of the year had been inspired by the work of Charles James. Like this, the design of Charles James continues to be highly valued, but in Korea, his name recognition is low and there are not much the study on him. This study aims at seeking for creative solution of design development and the design production method for creating high added value by analyzing the mode of expression for James' dress from the clothing construction perspective and examining the case of shape creation and its value. The object of analysis for the study is one of the dresses in his hey day(mid 1940's ~ 1958) and it was selected because it could be analyzed from the clothing construction perspective. And main research materials are his collection and other materials in the museum which has his works. The conclusions of the case study of dress form creation of Charles James are listed below; creation of new body form, innovation of diversified 3-dimensional draping, formation of motif from nature, and maximization of color-used composition effect. I want to shed new light on the worth of new clothing production method through the works of Charles James, a master of clothing construction.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기, 미국의 유명 꾸뛰리에인 찰스제임스(Charles James, 1906~1978)는 의복구성의 대가로 알려져 있다. 찰스제임스는 폴 푸아레와 크리스챤 디올(Christian Dior) 등 동시대의 대표적인 의상디자이너에게 감동과 영감을 주며 패션의 발달에 크게 기여한 인물이다. 1937년 제임스의 첫 번째 파리쇼를 접한 폴푸아레(Paul poiret) 는 자신이 ‘색채’로 이룬 일을 제임스는 ‘재봉가위’로 이루어낸다고 칭송하며 그의 가치를 높이 평가하였으며, 크리스챤 디올은 그의 뉴룩(New look) 을 찰스제임스에게서 영감을 받았다고 하였다. 2010년, 디올의 수석 디자이너였던 존갈리아노(John Galiano) 는 그해 S/S 컬렉션의 영감을 찰스제임스의 작품에서 받았다. 이처럼 찰스제임스의 디자인에 대한 가치는 지속적으로 평가되고 있지만 국내에서는 그에 대한 인지도가 낮고 연구가 미비한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 찰스제임스 드레스 작품의 표현양식을 의복구성적 관점에서 분석하고 창작조형 창출 방법을 살펴봄으로써 고부가가치 창출을 위한 창의적 디자인과 작품제작방법을 모색하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구를 위한 작품 분석의 대상은 찰스제임스의 전성기(1940년대 중반~ 1958년)의 것으로서 의복구성적 관점에서 분석이 가능한 드레스로 정하였다. 자료는 찰스제임스의 작품집과 그의 작품이 소장 되어있는 박물관의 자료를 주자료로 하였다. 연구의 결과로 도출 된 찰스제임스 드레스의 조형창출 사례는 새로운 바디 모형 창출을 통한 다각화된 3차원적 입체재단의 혁신, 자연에서 얻은 모티브의 형상화, 색채를 활용한 구성효과의 극대화 등으로 분석되었다. 본 연구는 의복구성의 거장인 찰스제임스의 작품을 통하여 창의적 의상제작 방법의 가치를 재조명 하는 데에 의의를 두고자 한다.
