어머니의 기질, 우울, 양육태도 및 자녀성격과의 관계분석 = An Analysis of the Relationships between Mother's Temperament, Depression, Parenting Attitude and Child's Character

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between mother's temperament, depression, parenting attitude and child's character and effects on child's character from main factors such as mother's temperament, depression and parenting attitude among elementary school children and their mothers by structural equation modeling.
The data of this study was collected from total 123 pairs of mother and elementary school students who live in 7 cities over all Korea. Beck's Depression Inventory(BDI) by Lee, Young-Ho and Song, Jong-Yong(1991) was administered to assess mother's depression, TCI-RS for mothers by Min, Byung-Bae, Oh, Hyun-Sook and Lee, Ju-Young(2007) was administered to assess mother's temperament, PARQ/Control(Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire/Control) by Nahm(2006) was administered to assess mother's parenting attitude. In order to examine demographic characteristics of mothers and children, frequency statistics was used. Reliability analysis of research tools was examined by Cronbach's alpha. The relationship between variables was measured by correlation analysis. The causal relationship and parameter effect were investigated by structural path analysis.
Because fit index of study model and validation model which verified the direct effects of child's character from mother's temperament and depression met significant level, the primary results of this study can be summarized as follow:
First, the results showed significant correlations between all mother's temperament and depression, mother's depression and child's character, mother's temperament and child's character, mother's depression and parenting attitude, mother's temperament and parenting attitude and mother's parenting attitude and child's character.
The effect of mother's temperament on child's character was positive and the effect of mother's depression on child's character was negative but they were not significant statistically.
Second, Mother's parenting attitude was found positively significant to child's character. Mother's temperament showed an indirect positive effect on child's character through parenting attitude. On the other hand, the results showed a negative effect on depression from mother's temperament, a positive effect on parenting attitude from mother's temperament, a negative effect on parenting attitude from mother's depression but all above pathes were not sufficient to the significant level.
But the main hypothesis of this study mainly focused on the indirect effect of mother's parenting attitude to child's character rather than on the direct effects of mother's temperament and depression. Even though the direct effects of mother's temperament and depression to child's character were not proved, the overall results of this study supported the results of previous studies(Miller, Cowan, Cowan, Hetherington & Clingempeel, 1993; Chang, 2011) that mother's temperament and depression did not have direct effects on child's character.
In conclusion, the study showed that all variants, mother's temperament, depression, parenting attitude and child's character had the meaningful relationships, mother's parenting attitude had a direct positive effect on child's character, and mother's temperament had an indirect positive effect on child's character through mother's parenting attitude. Mother's depression had a negative effect on parenting attitude to a certain degree than had a direct effect on child's character but a significant level was not sufficient. So child's character can be assumed based on mother's parenting attitude. The study showed meaningful results that even if a mother has handicaps in temperament and/or innate depression, it is possible for her to help forming a child's character with positive parenting attitude.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 아동기 자녀 성격에 영향을 미치는 주요한 요인이 되는 어머니의 기질, 우울, 양육태도 및 자녀 성격과의 관계를 알아보고 어머니의 기질과 우울이 양육태도를 매개로 자녀 성격에 미치는 영향을 구조방정식 모형을 통해 검증하고자 하였다.
연구대상은 전국 7개 지역에 거주하는 123명의 초등학생과 그들 각각의 어머니들이었다. 어머니의 우울을 측정하기 위해서 한국판 Beck 우울척도(이영호, 송종용, 1991)를 사용하였고, 어머니의 기질은 기질 및 성격검사, TCI-RS(민병배, 오현숙, 이주영, 2007)를 통하여, 자녀의 성격은 TCI의 아동용인 JTCI(오현숙, 민병배, 2007)를 통하여 측정하였다. 어머니의 양육태도를 측정하기 위해서는 부모의 수용-거부/ 통제척도, PARQ/Control(Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire/Control, Nahm, 2006)을 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 연구대상을 파악하기 위해 빈도분석을 실시하였고, 연구도구의 신뢰도 분석을 위해 내적합치도(Cronbach's alpha)를 분석하였으며, 변수 간의 관계를 파악하기 위한 상관분석과 변수들 간의 인과관계 및 매개효과 등을 파악하기 위해 구조방정식 모형이 사용되었다.
본 연구의 연구모형과 어머니의 기질과 우울이 자녀 성격에 미치는 직접적인 영향을 검증하기 위한 검증모형이 유의 수준에 만족되는 적합한 부합도를 지닌 것으로 나타났기에, 연구문제에 따른 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 어머니의 기질과 어머니의 우울, 어머니의 우울과 자녀 성격, 어머니의 기질과 자녀 성격, 어머니의 우울과 양육태도, 어머니의 기질과 양육태도 그리고 어머니의 양육태도와 자녀 성격 모두에서 유의미한 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 어머니의 기질은 자녀 성격에 정적인 영향을 보였고 어머니의 우울은 자녀 성격에 부적인 영향을 보였으나, 통계적으로 유의하지 못한 것으로 나타났다.
둘째, 어머니의 양육태도는 자녀 성격에 정적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치며, 어머니의 기질은 양육태도를 매개로 자녀 성격에 간접적으로 정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 어머니의 기질에서 우울은 부적인 영향을, 어머니의 기질에서 양육태도는 정적인 영향을, 어머니의 우울에서 양육태도는 부적 영향을 보였으나, 모든 경로가 유의수준에 충분하지는 못한 것으로 확인되었다.
하지만 본 연구의 주 가설이 어머니의 기질 및 우울은 자녀의 성격에 직접적인 영향을 미치기보다는 어머니의 양육태도를 매개로 간접적인 영향을 미친다는 것에 있으므로 비록 어머니의 기질과 우울이 자녀 성격에 미치는 직접적인 영향은 증명되지 못했으나, 전체적인 연구결과는 기질과 우울이 자녀 성격에 직접적인 영향을 미치지 않았다(Miller, Cowan, Cowan, Hetherington & Clingempeel, 1993; 장춘이, 2011)는 선행 연구 결과를 지지하는 것으로 나타났다.
종합하면, 어머니의 기질과 우울 및 양육태도와 자녀 성격은 모두 유의미한 상관관계가 있으며 어머니의 양육태도는 자녀 성격에 직접적으로 정적인 영향을 미치고 어머니의 기질은 자녀성격에 양육태도를 매개로 해서 간접적으로 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 어머니의 우울은 자녀 성격에 직접적으로 영향을 미치기보다는 양육태도에 다소 부적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나 유의미한 수준에 충분하지는 않았다. 따라서, 어머니의 양육태도에 따라 이후의 자녀 성격을 대략 예측할 수 있을 것으로 가정된다. 어머니가 기질적으로 불리한 조건을 갖고 있고, 우울감이 내재해 있다고 하더라도 긍정적인 양육태도를 가질 수 있다면 충분히 자녀의 건강한 성격 형성을 도울 수 있다는 점에서 본 연구가 의미하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다.
