It must be recognized that Toeye(1501-1570) suceede to the thught of Chu Hsi (1130-1200) on the divination and developed it into his own philospophy to be of realistic usefulness for unfoding it in Korean style.
The method of aivination was originally initiated by Chu Hsi, a legedary king of the ancient China, which Confucius formulated in the Commentary to the I Ching, the Book of Changes. This was again theoretically systematized by Shao Kang Chieh(1011-1077)during the Sung dynasty.
Also, for this study, Chu Hsi systematized the Principles of divination by philosophically formulating his own original idea on the basis of the said Commentary which might be calles the treasure of philosophy.
Then, Toegye succeeded to this version of Chu Hsi's and developed it into his own philosophy for further study. However, the methodology of the diagrams, centered on the method of observing the changes of fortune in detail with major emphasis on his own concept of divination. The contents of the said discussion are summarized as follows:
1. How to use the numbers nine and six;
2. Changes in the divination diagrams;
3. Divination by the change of the five lines;
4. Positions and names of the eight diagrams;
5. Historical evidence based o miscelaeous books;
6. Divination by stalks of plant;
7. Divination and interpreation by means of the diagrams;
8. How to cast the roacle.
In short, Togye applied the science of divination according to the diagrams in relation to everyday life. Therefore, it must not be forgotten that the forecast of destiny by thecaleder with "i" (the change) placed in "li"(the calendar), was something extremely contemporay and scientific. Toegy's view of the science of divination succeeded to and unfolded Chu Hsi's thought on the science of divination that was based on the Commentary to the I Ching(the Book of Changes)
Thus, it must be understood that Toegy's concept of the divinatory science was theoretically systematized by Chu Hsi whereas the Korean scholar opened up a new ground for the korean science of divination with more emphasis placed on the divinatory science by means of predicting destiny according to the calendar.
Now, it is an important task of Korea to carry out an in-depth study of Toegye's philosophy through a philosophical research of the science at this time when his philosophy is emerging as one of international significance.
