濟州島地方의 地名語彙 攷(Ⅰ) : A Survey of the Words Used in the Place Name in Cheju-do

The place names are rare cultural and are like a fossil that suggests the natural and cultural environment of an age. It is a cultural science much devoted to the history, geography and folklore
Especially, the relation of the place name and the language is quite close The place name is stronger in solidity rather than the dialect. It Is expected that the place name has an underlying form of a unique language of a nation without the relative Intrusion from the foreign language. Thus, in the study of dialects, the use of the place names is very important, the writer thinks.
In this sense this paper studies the foundation, background, form, moaning and etymology of the name from the linguistic point of view with an emphasis on the sufixes of the place names of Cheju-do This study is also conducted for the purpose of helping a study on the dialects of Cheju-do.
As the result of the study of the suffixe of the place names of Cheju-do, the foundation of the place names of Cheju-do has a factor of the natural and geographical environment than the cultural one
The snffix of the place names of Cheju-do has an old stratum of many languages because of the strong solidity Not only is it expected that this study will be good references of the diachonic study of the Korean language, but also it gives a lot of suggestions to the systematic survey of the dialects of Cheju-do. In the near future the education, analysis, classification of the suffix of the place names are linguistically studied.
