국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 16세기 종교개혁가였던 피터 마터 버미글리(Peter Martyr Vermigli, 1499-1562)의 자유선택론을 다루고 있다. 현대의 많은 신학자들과 철학자들은 개혁주의에서 가르치는 하나님의 주권 교리 (하나님의 작정, 예정과 섭리론)와 저항할 수 없는 은혜의 교리가 인간의 자유를 말살하고 결과 적으로 인간을 하나님의 꼭두각시로 전락시키는 형이상학적 결정론을 야기 한다고 비판하여 왔다. 하지만 이러한 비판은 16-17세기 개혁주의의 하나님의 주권과 인간의 자유선택 교리에 대한 잘못된 이해와 당시 개혁주의 사상 가들의 원자료(primary text)에 대한 무지에서 비롯된 것임을 본 논문은 밝히 고자 한다.
본 연구의 대상이 되는 버미글리는 16세기 개혁주의 자유선택론이 어떻게 발전되었는지를 잘 보여주는 동시에 개혁주의 자유선택론에 대한 기존 학계의 평가가 정당한 것인지를 검증하기 위한 좋은 실례가 된다. 왜냐하면 버미 글리는 그의 저작에서 인간의 자유선택이 개인이 처한 다양한 영적인 상황에 따라 어떻게 존재하고 기능하는지를 상세하게 논하며, 하나님의 작정, 예지, 섭리와 같은 신적인 필연성과 인간의 자유선택이 양립할 수 있는 지와 같은 논쟁적인 주제들을 매우 심도 있게 다루고 있기 때문이다.
결론적으로 본 논문은 버미글리의 저작들에 대한 연구를 통하여, 개혁주의 신학이 하나님의 절대주권을 철저하게 강조하면서도 동시에 인간의 자유와 우발성(contingency)의 존재를 인정하고 있고 하나님의 작정과 은혜가 인간의 자유를 말살하기보다 오히려 그것과 양립할 수 있음을 밝힘으로써, 먼저 개혁주의 자유선택론이 결정론과 운명론을 야기한다는 기존 학계의 비판이 잘못된 것임을 논증하고, 더 나아가 이를 바탕으로 역사적 개혁주의의 자유 선택론 교리에 대한 학계의 새로운 재평가와 좀 더 심도 깊은 연구가 필요함을 역설하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study will deal with Peter Martyr Vermigli’s (1499-1562) doctrine of free choice, focusing on his understanding of the fourfold state of free choice and relation between divine causality and human free choice, in order to illustrate the way Reformed theologians of the sixteenth century developed their ideas of human free choice. Vermigli’s doctrine of free choice is one of the ideal places to study the development of Reformed doctrine of free choice in the sixteenth century and to examine the validity of previous scholarship because he discusses highly provocative theological issues such as whether divine foreknowledge can be compatible with human free choice in his writings.
The main purpose of this study is first to contribute to an understanding of Vermigli’s doctrine of free choice and second to offer an evaluation regarding the validity of previous scholarship pertaining to Reformed teaching on free choice in general. In particular, moving beyond the problematic approach of the older scholarship, by performing substantive and careful study of his writings on free choice in the intellectual context of sixteenth century, this essay will show that Vermigli’s idea of free choice defies previous historical myths about Reformed theology that human beings completely lose their freedom because sin exerts bondage of their will, and divine decree, predestination, and providence reduces mankind to passive pawn or senseless stocks. Unlike the previous deterministic interpretation of Reformed thought on free choice, Vermigli’s doctrine of free choice clearly shows that human beings still retain the natural freedom from compulsion even after the fall, and divine predetermination and human free choice can be compatible.
