Private schools were at the center of modern education in Korean society and Christian schools at the center of private schools. The Christian school has not only been an active channel for Western modern education to be transplanted, but it has also been a source of national development by cultivating Christian talent who combines talent and faith as an important base of national spirit. Today, however, Christian schools face a serious identity crisis.
It is impossible to imagine a Christian school that cannot implement the founding philosophy of Christianity. After the Equalization Policy, education policies that limit the autonomy of private schools have been continuously implemented, and the autonomy of Christian schools that will realize the founding ideology today is considerably undermined. In particular, the current government is promoting a policy of making private schools public schools for the purpose of enhancing publicity and enhancing transparency in education. The 21st National Assembly has proposed and is processing amendments to the Private School Act to support this. Looking at the unilateral private school policy, I am fundamentally worried about whether Christian schools can exist in this land.
This study was initiated to seek a foundation for the normalization of Christian schools. The crisis in private schools, including Christian schools, was recognized as starting with the conflicting conceptualization of educational publicness and private school autonomy, and sought to find the power to re-conceptualize it in the 'Social Trinity theory' of theology. This is because social trinity theory is the archetype of a community that can overcome the unilateral hierarchy of the state and schools and mutually reinvent public and autonomy through the principle of 'Unity in Diversity'.
Korean churches and Christian schools should be able to respond systematically and professionally so that the next generation can be educated in accordance with Christian values in schools. I hope that the interest and sense of crisis in Christian schools triggered by the revision of the Private School Act will serve as a new foundation for the restoration of the identity of Christian schools and full Christian education on the land.
