The accessibility of audio and video technology has made it possible to utilize both the auditory and visual channels to present listening texts on L2 listening tests. However, with regard to assessment, research results on implementing visuals have been controversial with the issue of test validity. The present study examined the effectiveness of using video and audio in the listening test with using authentic material, news with Korean learners and their aspects of two different modes. High school students were involved to take both audio and video versions of web-based listening test, and their opinion of the two different modes of assessing listening were closely observed through the post questionnaire. The result showed that the test scores of the audio group were higher than those of the video group and responses in the post questionnaire were comparable by the listening items. Implications and limitations of the findings are discussed.
