프랑수아 모리악의 작품 속 주인과 노예의 변증법 – 모스와 리쾨르의 증여 이론을 중심으로 = The Dialectic of Master and Slave in François Mauriac’s Works - Focusing on the Theory of Gift by Mauss and Ricœu

The purpose of this study is to analyze the ontological struggle between master and slave appearing in the world of François Mauriac’s works, focusing on theories related to gift. According to Marcel Mauss, there is always a hidden intention in the act of gift. It is the desire to be recognized and the desire of the mastership to occupy a superior position. Among Mauriac’s characters, those who express the desire of the most powerful mastership always try to maintain the position of a giver only.
In Mauriac’s works, the relationships between master and slave are sometimes overturned. ‘Love command from above’ mentioned by Paul Ricœur and Emmanuel Levinas takes place in the dialectic of master and slave. Levinas asserts that the ‘appeal’ of the poor and weak like ‘widows and orphans’ is actually a ‘command from above.’ Ricœur presents the discourse of ‘love command’ based on Jesus’ teaching of ‘golden rule’ and ‘give freely’ in <the Gospel of Luke>. In Mauriac’s work, “look at me in the poor”, a verse from <the Gospel of Matthew>, is presented as a link to synthesize the theories of these two thinkers. The characters who are called as Christ’s imitators in Mauriac’s work choose to renounce the position of the high and become enslaved themselves. They practice the gift of self-renunciation, even giving up their own lives. In this way, those who choose to become slaves through the absolute gift without price and compensation paradoxically stand in the place of true masters.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 프랑수아 모리악의 작품 세계에 나타나는 주인과 노예의 존재론적 투쟁 을 증여론을 중심으로 분석하는 데 있다. 마르셀 모스에 따르면 증여 행위에는 항상 숨은 의 도가 존재한다. 그것은 바로 인정받고자 하는 욕망, 우월한 위치에 자리하고자 하는 주인의 욕망이다. 선물을 주는 자와 받는 자에게는 주인과 노예의 존재론적 의미가 부여된다. 주는 자는 우월한 위치에 있게 되며, 받는 자는 그 받은 것에 답례하기까지는 낮은 자의 위치에 있게 된다. 모리악의 인물들 중 가장 강력한 주인의 욕망을 표출하는 자들은 항상 줄 수 있는 자의 위치만을 유지하려고 한다.
모리악의 작품에는 주는 자와 받는 자 사이의 주인과 노예의 위상이 완전히 전복되는 모습 이 자주 나타난다. 높은 자와 낮은 자 사이의 전복은 단순한 복수나 혁명의 시도가 아니라, 모두가 함께 주인의 자리에서 행복을 공유할 수 있는 가능성으로 이어진다. 이러한 주인과 노예의 변증법에는 폴 리쾨르가 말한 무대가의 증여로서의 자기 포기와 용서의 논리가 작용 한다. 모리악의 작품 속 비천한 인물들, 존재론적 노예의 위치에 있던 자들 가운데 자기 자신 을 선물로 내어주는 자들이 있다. 이들은 스스로 노예되기를 자처한다. 이들은 리쾨르가 말한 “먼저 있음으로서의 용서”, 즉 하나님의 사랑이라는 절대적 선물 앞에 자신을 둔 자들이다. 무엇으로도 갚을 수 없는 절대적 선물을 받아들임으로써 그들은 스스로를 노예로 정립한다. 그리고 자기의 목숨까지도 내어주는 자기 포기의 증여를 실천한다. 이처럼 대가와 보상 없는 절대적 증여를 통해 스스로 노예되기를 선택한 이들은 주인의 자리에 서게 된다. 하지만 이들 의 주인됨은 그 누군가를 노예의 자리로 밀어 넣지 않는다. 그들의 희생은 주인과 노예의 투 쟁을 중단시키고 보편적 이익과 행복의 가능성을 열어 놓는다.
