번역을 통한 사회 참여-청소년 성소수자 담론을 중심으로 = The Expansion of Discourse on Sexual Minority Among Adolescents Through Translation

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to observe how translation contributes to the expansion of discourse on sexual minority among adolescents. Translation reflects trends in social discourse and at the same time engages in the formation and development of such discourse. Four translations from English novels on sexual minorities aimed at adolescent readers are here examined. The paratexts of these texts are studied to determine the degree to which Korean translations expand sexual minority discourse. Paratexts include titles, covers, blurbs, prefaces, and also texts dislocated from the books such as interviews of authors and translators. The main texts other than the paratexts are also examined to find out how sexual minority reference terms are translated. The terms in Korean can provide a yardstick to measure the familiarity of such terms to Korean readers. The results show that translations have added paratexts other than those in the original English texts and changed some of them to call for reader awareness about sexual minorities. The results also reveal an aspect of how the lexicon of sexual minority discourse is established.
