This study is aimed at defining the concept of the status of Shinmuyong, intending to examine a tendency of defining the concept of modern dance, through the process of frequency analysis for the details stated in Shinmuyong-related separate volume and thesis. With regard to an evaluation for the status of Shinmuyong there has been a negative evaluation as stateless “traditional distortion,” “a loser of Shinmuyong and an act of the last expedient”, while some others gave a positive evaluation as “modernization of Korean dance” and “modern succession of tradition”. Even though there has been actually many precedent studies regarding the status of Shinmuyong, in developing a discourse on the Shinmuyong that contributed to a creation of new styled Korean dance and the birth of Shinmuyong, the difference just means something dissimilar, not wrong, and mutual understanding and respect are required, but as a result of reviewing its contents this study confirmed that an effort to suggest new theories, that resolve a difference between controversial points, has not been made.
